Twenty Years Later, I Recognise My Younger Self in the Boy On the eve of his wedding, Arthur suspected Martha of being unfaithful. Despite her vows of loyalty, he refused to believe her. Yet, twenty years later, he met her son—a mirror image of his own youth… They shared the kind of love about which novels are written: passionate, unique, overwhelming. Many envied their relationship and tried to disrupt it. The young couple slowly prepared for their wedding, a day that, sadly, never came. The night before the wedding, Martha revealed she was pregnant. Instead of happiness, she faced Arthur’s anger and frustration. Arthur insisted she must have been unfaithful, repeating that she couldn’t possibly have conceived so quickly. Staring her in the eye, he told her he didn’t believe her. And so, she had the baby alone. Friends called Arthur a fool. Everyone could see Martha’s devotion, but he remained stubborn. The relationship collapsed, the wedding was cancelled. He suggested she have an abortion, but Martha refused. She waited for his apology until the last moment, but it never came. Martha wouldn’t call, and Arthur was certain he was right. They parted ways and started new lives. Martha struggled with the consequences alone. Whenever their paths crossed, Arthur pretended he didn’t recognise her. He glimpsed her at the park with the child but looked away, unwilling to confront the past. Life was tough for Martha as a single mother, but she found happiness regardless. Though she put her personal life on hold, she had her little angel, for whom she was willing to sacrifice everything. She worked multiple jobs to ensure her son would be cared for and loved. Chris (formerly Krzyś) thanked his mother, supporting and defending her always. He earned a degree, served in the military, and found work. As he grew, he stopped asking about his father, understanding the truth without words. Of course, Martha told stories of his father in childhood, but did he really believe them? The answer was clear. Chris was his father’s double. At twenty, he reminded Martha of the Arthur she had once loved so deeply. One day, fate brought all three together: Martha, Arthur, and Chris. It was impossible for Arthur to ignore the striking resemblance. He watched them quietly, unable to find words. Three days later, he came to Martha and asked: “Can you ever forgive me?” “A long time ago…” Martha whispered. And then the stories about Dad came to life—Chris met his father for the first time.
Twenty years later, in the shifting haze of a memory, I recognise in the boy the glimmer of my own youthful ghost.
