A Grandson’s Request: A Heartwarming Story of Trust, Family, and the Power of Helping Those Closest to Us – “Gran, I have a favour to ask… I really need money. Quite a lot, actually.” Denis paid her a visit one evening, and it was clear he was nervous. Normally, he’d pop by a couple of times a week to help Lillian—running to the shops, taking out the bins, even fixing the old sofa. He was always calm and reliable. But tonight, something was different. Lillian had always been wary—it’s a tricky world out there! “Denis, may I ask, what do you need the money for? And just how much is ‘a lot’?” she asked, tense. Denis was her eldest grandson. A kind-hearted boy, finished school last year, now working and studying part-time. His parents never complained about him. But what could he possibly need so much money for? “I can’t really tell you yet, Gran, but I promise I’ll pay you back—just not all at once,” Denis replied, hesitating. “You know I live on my pension,” Lillian said, unsure what to do. “How much is it?” “One thousand pounds.” “Why not ask your parents?” she asked automatically, though she knew what Denis would say. His father, her son-in-law, was strict and believed children should solve their own problems. “They won’t give it to me,” Denis confirmed. What if he’d gotten himself into trouble? Would giving him the money make things worse, or not giving it? Lillian scrutinised her grandson. “Gran, it’s nothing bad, I swear. I’ll pay every penny back in three months, I promise! Don’t you trust me?” Perhaps she should just give him the money, she thought—there should be at least one person he can count on. After all, she had a bit set aside for emergencies. Perhaps this was it. “Alright, I’ll lend you the money. But wouldn’t it be better if your parents knew?” “Gran, you know I love you and always keep my promises. But if you can’t, I can try to get a loan. I’m working.” The next morning, Lillian went to the bank, withdrew the money, and gave it to Denis. He beamed, kissed her, and thanked her. “You’re my closest person, Gran. I’ll pay you back,” he called as he dashed off. At home, Lillian sat with a cuppa and reflected—over the years, whenever she’d needed help, someone had always come through. These days, it seemed everyone looked out for themselves. A week later, Denis dropped by with a big smile. “Gran, here’s part of the money—I got an advance at work. Can I bring someone round tomorrow?” “Of course, I’ll bake your favourite poppy seed cake,” she smiled, relieved he’d visit again. Maybe everything would become clear. Denis came by in the evening with a slender girl at his side. “Gran, this is Lisa—my girlfriend. Lisa, this is my lovely grandmother, Lillian.” Lisa smiled warmly, “Thank you so much, Mrs. Holden.” “Come in, dear, it’s lovely to meet you,” Lillian said, already liking her. Over tea and cake, Denis explained. “I couldn’t tell you before, Gran. Lisa was so worried about her mum—she had a sudden health crisis and needed urgent help. Lisa’s a bit superstitious, didn’t want me to tell anyone. But her mum’s had surgery and it looks good.” “Thank you. You’re so kind. I’m so very grateful,” Lisa said, dabbing her eyes. “Alright, Lis, no more tears—it’s behind us now,” Denis said, getting up. “Come on, Gran, I’ll walk Lisa home.” “Off you go, darlings. Goodnight—may it all turn out well,” Lillian called after them. Her grandson had grown into a wonderful young man. She was proud she’d believed in him; it wasn’t just about the money—helping him had brought them closer. Two months later, Denis returned the last of the money. “Gran, we made it just in time. If you hadn’t helped, it could have ended badly. Thank you. I truly believe there’ll always be someone to help when you need it. And for you, Gran, I’ll do anything!” Lillian ruffled his hair fondly. “Off you go. Bring Lisa round, I’d love to see her again!” “We will!” Denis gave her a hug before leaving. As she closed the door, Lillian recalled her own grandmother’s words: “Always help your own—it’s the English way. If you stand by your loved ones, they’ll always stand by you. Never forget that.”
