Good Mornings to a Mannequin: Until One Day, It Answered Back

On the corner of Baker Street in London stood a mannequin in the window of a clothing shop.

It wore the same outfit every day—a white shirt, gray trousers, and a crooked flat cap no one ever straightened. A forgotten figure. It had stood there for over a decade, so still, so much a part of the scenery, that most barely noticed it anymore.

But the shopkeepers of the neighborhood had grown fond of it. Every morning, as they opened their stores, they’d greet it with a chuckle: *”Morning, Mr. Albert”*—the name they’d given it. It was a joke, a ritual, a small way to start the day. The baker, the newsagent, the florist… they all called out to the mannequin.

And of course, it never answered.

Until one day, it did.

It was a Monday. The shop window was fogged with the damp of early morning. When the shopkeepers passed by and said, *”Morning, Mr. Albert,”* the mannequin… smiled.

It moved.

And in a quiet voice, it replied, *”Good morning, lads.”*

Everyone froze.

It wasn’t a mannequin.

It was a man. His name really was Albert. He was seventy-four years old. He had been the shop’s night watchman for months. He’d lost his home, his family was long gone, and he had nowhere else to go. So he slept in the storeroom at night. And in the mornings, when the shop opened, he stood still behind the glass, pretending to be a mannequin.

Not for a laugh.

But because, behind the glass, he felt less alone. *”I like watching people,”* he confessed. *”Seeing how they start their day. And here… at least no one looks right through me.”*

The truth came out when a passerby filmed the moment and shared it online. It spread like wildfire. Thousands wrote, *”Sometimes we think no one sees us… but there’s always someone watching from the other side of the glass.”*

Now, Mr. Albert no longer pretends. They gave him a job as the shop’s greeter. He sits in a chair beside the window, smiles at the crowds, and every morning, when the shopkeepers call out, *”Morning, Mr. Albert,”* he replies with words that have since become part of the street’s lore:

*”Good morning… and thank you for seeing me.”*
