Bringing Life to the Child of My Husband’s Lover

I told everything to James.

Every word that left my lips felt strange, as if it didn’t belong to my own story… as though I were recounting a tragedy I’d heard elsewhere, about another woman.

But no.

It was my story. My hell. My truth.

My voice trembled, and more than once, I thought I wouldn’t be able to go on.

But I had to. I had to free myself.

“The child… the child I gave birth to,” I said, barely above a whisper, “wasn’t mine.”

I looked up and saw him frown, confused.

“What do you mean, not yours?”

“Someone swapped my embryo,” I continued, choking on my words and tears. “They replaced it with another—one that carried my husband’s genes… and his mistress’s.”

James stared at me, wide-eyed, as if struck by lightning.

“What…?”

“Yes,” I said. “They wanted me to carry it in my womb. To give birth to it. To register it as mine…”

And then… to kill me.

So their baby would inherit everything—my wealth, my estate, the insurance. All of it.

I reached into my bag and pulled out a USB drive.

“I have proof. There’s a video…”

I handed it to him. He plugged it into his laptop without a word, his hands tense.

The screen lit his face.

And then he saw them.

Him… and her.

His mistress. My executioner.

Both naked, laughing. Trading filthy kisses and empty touches.

And then, as if it weren’t enough, they spoke of me.

“That fool will give birth soon,” she said. “Tell me, when do we get rid of her?”

“Wait until she registers the baby,” he answered coldly. “Once she does… I’ll arrange an accident. Cut the brakes. Make it look like fate.”

“Brakes? Love, this isn’t a film. We need something more… absolute.”

“I’ve already spent a fortune getting your friend Emily to help at the clinic. Swapping embryos wasn’t easy… or cheap. I had to fake massive losses to justify the money. This can’t fail, Lily. It can’t.”

The video stopped.

James stood up.

The formidable man everyone feared.

The lion who roared in boardrooms.

The shark who crushed his rivals without hesitation—now, at this sight, he was shaking with fury and disgust.

His eyes were bloodshot. His breathing ragged, as if rage was choking him.

“They’re dead!” he shouted. “I’ll destroy them! With my own hands if I must!”

“No!” I stopped him, standing quickly. “Not yet.”

He looked at me like I’d lost my mind. And maybe I had.

“First… I want them to suffer. I want them to drown in their own misery, like I did in silence. I want them to be afraid, to look in the mirror and not recognize the hell they created. I want… revenge.”

James stepped closer. He searched my face, and I didn’t understand why.

Then, he nodded.

“Fine. If that’s what you want, I’ll help you.”

I stared at him, stunned. “What…? What are you saying?”

“I’ll help you,” he repeated firmly. “If you want to make them pay… I’ll make sure they pay. Dearly.”

We’ll take everything from them—their peace, their power, their security. All of it.

I struggled to breathe, my chest tight with emotion.

I looked at him with teary eyes, still disbelieving.

“Why…? Why are you helping me, James?”

He lowered his gaze for a second. When he looked back, his eyes held something I couldn’t place—something I wanted to understand.

“Why do you think you came to me, Charlotte? Why… of all people, me?”

I didn’t know what to say. I lowered my eyes, but then spoke the truth in my heart.

“I don’t know… I just… this was the only place I felt safe. I didn’t know where else to go. And here… I knew I’d be protected.”

James moved closer. His strong hands gripped my shoulders.

I felt his warmth.

And for a moment, all my fear vanished.

“This will always be your refuge, Charlotte. No one will lay a finger on you here. No one will hurt you again. You have me.”

I trembled.

“But… you shouldn’t get involved. It’s dangerous…”

Then he shouted with a force that shook me to my core—

“I’m involved because I care about you! Because… I’ve always loved you, Charlotte! Always!”

My world stopped.

I expected many things—

Rejection. Advice. Scorn.

But not this. Never an “I love you.”

Not when my life was in ruins.

Not when I felt like the ashes of a broken woman.

And yet… there he was. Loving me in the wreckage.
