Heart Wounded by Despair: A Journey Toward New Joys

**A Heart Wounded by Hope: The Journey to New Joys**

“Emma, we’re finished!” James said coldly. “I want a real family, children. You can’t give me that. I’ve filed for divorce. You have three days to pack. Call me when you’re gone. I’ll stay with my mother until I arrange a flat for my child and his mother. Yes, don’t look so shockedmy new girlfriend is expecting!”

Emma stood silent, feeling the ground vanish beneath her. What could she say? For five years, they had tried for a child, yet each of her three pregnancies ended in heartbreak. The doctors insisted she was healthy, but something always went wrong. She lived carefully, especially during pregnancy, yet last time, shed collapsed at workthe ambulance arrived too late

The door slammed behind James, and Emma sank onto the sofa, drained. She couldnt muster the strength to pack. Where would she go? Married, shed lived with her aunt, but she was gone now, and her son had sold the flat. Return to her grandmothers cottage in Willowbrook? Rent somewhere? And her job? Questions swirled, but there was no time to think.

The next morning, the door openedher mother-in-law, Margaret, stepped in.

“Not sleeping? Good,” she said curtly. “Ive come to make sure you dont take anything extra.”

“Im not interested in your sons old socks,” Emma snapped. “Shall we tally my belongings instead?”

“Always so stubborn! You used to be so sweet, so quiet. I told James after the first timeyoure barren.”

“Is that why youre here? Then keep quiet and watch.”

“Where do you think youre taking those dishes?” Margaret hissed.

“Theyre minefrom my aunt. A memory of her.”

“The place will look bare without them!”

“Not my concern. But youll have a grandchild soon.”

“Take only whats yours!”

“My laptop, the coffee machine, the microwavegifts from colleagues. The car was mine before we married. Your son has his own.”

“You have everythingexcept children!”

“Thats none of your business. Perhaps its Gods will.”

“No remorse, eh? Did you do this on purpose?”

“Dont be absurd. The thought alone breaks my heart.”

Emma glanced aroundher things were gone. Hairbrush, cosmetics, slippers Then she rememberedthe little porcelain cat, a keepsake from her grandmother. Inside was a locket and a ringworth little in gold but everything in sentiment. James called it junk. Had he thrown it out? She hurried to the balcony.

“What are you looking for?” Margaret demanded. “Hurry up!”

The cat figurine was still there, untouched. Now she could leave.

“Here are the keys. Lets hope we never meet again.”

At the office, Emma requested leaveshed been on sick leave but needed time.

“We all feel for you,” her manager said. “But were struggling without you. Will three weeks be enough? Half the projects stall when youre gone.”

“Good. Itll keep my mind busy. Thanks.”

“Need any help?”

“No.”

“Well sort your pay and bonuses.”

“Thank you.”

She didnt bother flat-huntingshe drove straight to Willowbrook. Her grandmothers cottage had stood empty since her death three years ago. Emma never knew her mothershed died in childbirth. Now Emma, too, would never be a mother

An hour later, she arrived. The old oak tree, the overgrown daisies. The last time she and James were here, theyd barbecued in autumn. The shed key was still hidden. As she opened the door, she froze.

Silence.

Standing there, she felt a strange comfortthis old house would shelter her again. Perhaps sorrow, in time, would lead to new happiness. **Sometimes, the deepest wounds teach us to cherish the simplest joys.**
