Full-Time Grandma: When Love for Grandchildren Turns into a Burden

**Full-Time Grandma: When Love for Grandchildren Becomes a Burden**

I always imagined retirement would finally be my timeto read, knit, stroll through the park, and enjoy the things I never had a moment for. But those dreams vanished at the sound of the doorbell.

It was a Sunday, just before the autumn half-term. At the door stood my daughter Emily with her two boysOliver, 12, and Henry, 4. No warning, no explanation.

“Mum, look after the kids. James and I are off for a spa break. We’re absolutely knackered!” she said, helping the boys out of their coats.

“But I thought you werent on holiday yet! What about work?” I asked, bewildered.

“James took three days off. Mum, we havent got time!” And just like that, they were gone.

Within minutes, the telly was blaring and clothes were strewn everywhere. I tried to tidy upno use. They refused to eat the stew Id made because their mum had promised them takeaway. I rang Emily to tell her the boys were demanding a delivery.

“Ill order them pizza. They never eat your slop anywayits always a battle! Take them out somewhere, have fun! Youre the one who says they wear you out at home!” she snapped.

“With what money? My pension?” I retorted, furious.

“Theyre your grandkids, not strangers! I cant believe youd say that!” Then she hung up.

For a whole week, I cooked, cleaned, begged, and endured. I love my grandsonstruly. But I cant be the “free nanny” anymore. The generation gap and my own childrens lack of respect make it unbearable.

I gave everything so my daughter could grow up happy. And now all I get is blame. Dont we, the elders, deserve a bit of peace? Why does everyone act like our lives dont matter anymore?

Well, I wont stay quiet.
