Today I Invited My Ex-Daughter-in-Law and Her Children for Christmas Eve Dinner, But I Banned My Son from Coming

Today, Ive invited my former daughter-in-law and her children for Christmas Eve, but Ive declined my sons company. Im preparing the Christmas pudding, setting the table, and eagerly awaiting the arrival of my beloved daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Ive baked them a cake and bought presents, hoping theyll sing carols in my home and bring some holiday cheer. For as long as I can, Ill always stand by them.

While preparing the Christmas dinner, I couldnt resist calling my former daughter-in-law to invite her and the children. I made it clear my son wasnt welcome. Id warned him years ago, when he left his first wife, that I wouldnt accept another daughter-in-lawbecause to me, she is and always will be Emily.

My son divorced five years ago. It was deeply irresponsiblehe walked out for another woman when his youngest was barely a few months old. Of course, hed been lying and cheating for years before that, making excuses while Emily struggled alone.

While Emily juggled raising two small children, my son spent hours supposedly “working,” though he was really seeing someone else. Eventually, his mistress gave him an ultimatum: choose her or his family. He packed his bags and left, abandoning Emily with two babies.

From the start, I took Emilys side. My son behaved disgracefully. He pays child support, but what good is money without a fathers love or a stable home? He ignored my advice and remarried last year. Everyone assumed Id accept his new wife, but I refused. Even after they had a child together, my feelings didnt change.

To me, my grandchildren are Emilys children. I dont need others. Ive even told my son that one day, hell come crawling back, full of regret. For now, he stays away, and I spend the holidays with Emily and the little ones.

Emily and I have a wonderful bond. We celebrate together, call often, and visit regularly. She devotes herself to her children, and as their grandmother, I do everything I can to helpbabysitting, supporting them financially, even helping with homework. Over the years, Emily has become like a daughter to me. Her own parents live miles away and cant offer much help.

Now, Christmas is near. Ive prepared the pudding, set the table, and wait for Emily and the children to arrive. Theres a cake for the little ones and gifts under the tree. Let them sing carols and fill my home with joy. For as long as I live, Ill stand by thembecause family isnt just about blood, but the love you choose to keep.
