Can I Spend Winter with You? Gas Prices Are Sky-High and I’m Too Worn Out to Chop Firewood.

**May I Spend Winter with You?**

The heating bills are soaring, and I havent the strength to chop firewood.

My daughter, Emily Whitmore, came for the weekend to fetch my groceries, and I dared to ask: *”May I stay with you this winter? The gas prices are too high, and my hands cant manage the logs anymore.”* But she only sighed and said, *”Where, Mum? In my flat? When Ive a proper house, then Ill take you in.”*

No one should endure such loneliness in their twilight years.

Let me share my sorrow. I was widowed far too youngjust twenty-six. My husband left me with two small children: Thomas, barely three, and little Sophie still in nappies. I gave them everything. Feeding, clothing, raising themwhat choice did I have? I worked full days, then returned to scrubbing floors and tending the garden. We lived in a village near York, but my wages never stretched far enough. Alone, I mowed the grass, split wood for the hearthwhat else could I do?

The children grew. They vanished into Londons sprawl.

When I was spry, I kept a patch of land. My grandchildren would visit, nibble fresh carrots, sip warm milk. I pinched pennies from my pension, slipped them into my childrens hands.

But age gnawed at me. Now I can scarcely walk. Winter is the cruelest season.

Emily came one weekend, arms laden with tinned beans and loaves. I gathered my courage: *”Might I stay with you? Just till spring? The gas bills a nightmare, and the logs”*

She cut me off: *”Mum, be reasonable. My flats tiny. Once we buy a house, perhaps.”*

When my legs failed me completely, the neighbours rang Thomas. He muttered about deadlines, a sick mother-in-law in Manchesterno time to visit.

They called my sister Margaret instead. She came at once, bundled me into her car. Were it not for her, Id have frozen in that empty cottage.

Months have slipped by. My children havent called.

When I was usefulstrongthey needed me. Now Im a ghost to them.

What did I do wrong? When did their hearts turn to stone?

If youre reading this: cherish your parents. No one else will love you so fiercely, so selflessly. Not in this world.
