Seventy and Fabulous! For Her Milestone Birthday, She Bought Elegant Fabric and Commissioned a Stunning, Sophisticated Dress.

**Diary Entry 12th May**

Today was Mums seventieth birthdaya proper milestone. Shed bought fabric weeks ago and had a dress specially made for the occasion. Lovely thing, elegant, with silver earrings shed ordered online to match. When she put it all on and looked in the mirror, she nearly glowed. New things do lift the spirits, she thought, smiling at herself. Then she set to work in the kitchen, preparing a spread fit for the guestsher sisters, and my uncle, who was bringing Gran. Shes ninety-five next month.

The table shone with the good china, and the food looked irresistible. When everyone arrived, Gran was given the place of honour, though we all knew shed slip off for a nap soon enough. Mum came out in her new dress, earrings sparkling, and the room burst into admiration. She basked in it, pleased theyd noticed. We raised our glassesonce, then twiceuntil one of her sisters said, Honestly, love, a new dress at seventy? And those earrings mustve cost a pretty penny. Whats the point? You hardly go out, no man to impress, no work dos. Youve got cupboards full of nice thingswear those out first.

The others nodded, chiming in about their own overflowing wardrobes. Just like that, Mums dress seemed to tighten, the earrings dragging at her lobes. The joy drained right out of her. Seventy. Done with life, dressed up like some silly old woman. Her smile hardened into stone. She didnt want to talk, didnt want to eat. The guests hushed, uneasy.

Then Gran spoke up. Quiet until now, she said, My mother lived near a hundred. So did Dad. Long lives, ours. When Mum turned ninety, Dad went to the market and bought her a crimson shawl. At dinner, he pulled it from his coat and draped it over her shoulders. She sat there stroking it, glowinglike shed shed twenty years. Gran paused. Things arent for uswere for them. They bring us joy. Love does that too. She fixed her daughter with a look. Mind that sharp tongue of yours. Words cost nothing but can cut deep. Then she went to lie down.

The table stayed sombre. The sister muttered an apology, but the air stayed thick. We talked, but it was forced; jokes fell flat. Then my niece Lucy arrived with her husband, bursting in with laughter and hugs. He knelt, presenting Mum with roses, singing an old ballad line, while Lucy clasped a pearl necklace round her neck. Where on earth did you find these? Mum gasped. Lucy dragged her to the mirror, clapping, beaming.

Just like that, the poison lifted. Glasses clinked, laughter returnedreal this time. Mum sat there, pearls at her throat, thinking, *Seventy? Blimey, theres years left yet. Just live and enjoy them.*

And she did. Happy. Radiant. Seventy.

**Lesson:** Joy isnt in the years youve lived but in the love you let inand the occasional new dress.
