Todays entry feels like a confession Ive kept too long. For Emilys birthday I arranged a surprise that could only be described as royal a weekend stay at a fivestar hotel in Bath, complete with champagne and a private carriage ride through the Georgian streets. The party was in full swing when my phone rang. An unfamiliar number displayed SarahPregnant. I hesitated, but answered. Her voice trembled, John, we need to talk. I could hear the babys heartbeat in the background.
Emily was radiant that evening. She had finally met a man she truly wanted to build a life with, and every date with me seemed like a scene out of a romantic comedy. Id bring her bouquets of roses from the local florist and little gifts from the market. Her friends envied her luck, though Barbara, ever the cynic, would mutter under her breath:
Shes with you only because you have the money she needs.
I chose to ignore Barbaras remarks and basked in Emilys joy.
Six months after we started dating, I introduced Emily to my parents at our family home in Surrey. At first they were skeptical; my father had always hoped Id marry the son of his business partner, not the daughter of a schoolteacher. Yet, after seeing how genuine we were, they gave their blessing and everything fell into place.
Within a year we were married in a church in Canterbury, surrounded by over a hundred guests. My parents wedding gift was a flat in a new development in central Bristol. Standing on the balcony of our twentiethfloor apartment, overlooking the citys rooftops, it felt as if the whole world lay beneath our feet.
My father quickly found me a senior position at his engineering firm. A few years later I was promoted to deputy director, handling key projects. Gradually, my dad grew to respect my work ethic. He once told me, Now I can rest easy about the companys future; youre a worthy successor. In the early days, Emily and I enjoyed a quiet life, often escaping on holidays to the Continent France, Spain, Italy, even a quick jaunt to Ireland each year. Eventually my parents started nudging us about grandchildren. The idea of an heir began to surface.
Months passed, and when we finally took a pregnancy test, the line stayed faint. Concern washed over us, so we both booked appointments at a private fertility clinic in London. The results were disheartening I had a medical issue. I began treatments, spent countless hours at expensive clinics, consulted specialists, and underwent several rounds of IVF, all to no avail. By the time I turned thirty, the prospect of a child felt increasingly like a distant dream.
We decided to celebrate my birthday with a family gathering. My motherinlaw and sister arrived, and on my side my own parents and two cousins made the trip. Midbanquet, my phone buzzed. The hall was noisy, so I slipped outside. An unknown number called. I assumed it was a friend, but a womans voice introduced herself:
Emily, I know you well, so please listen calmly. Your husband and I have been together for a long time and love each other deeply. Were expecting a baby soon. Hes truly happy with me. He told me you cant have children, so I ask you to let him go, because only with me can he be truly content.
I felt my world tilt. I forced a smile, walked back to the guests, and pretended everything was fine.
When the evening ended and my parents were alone with us, I recounted the call. My husband went pale as a sheet, unable to explain. My father erupted, shouting and ordering him out of the house. As I stepped back into the hallway, my drunken husband stumbled out, swaying.
He tried to convince me that he was bewildered, that the woman had simply enchanted him. He claimed he had been searching for a surrogate to bear a child for us and had abandoned the idea. I believed him and let him inside. The next morning I phoned my father, assuring him wed reconciled and all was well, though a knot of unease remained in my chest.
Now, sitting here with a cup of tea, I wrestle with the decision of whether to let him leave with that woman, especially now that a child is on the way for her. I love Emily, yet I know I will suffer regardless of the path I choose. The lesson Im learning, painfully slow, is that honesty cannot be postponed forever; the truth you hide only grows heavier, and once it erupts, it shatters everything you thought was solid.
