My Niece Wanted a Pram for Her Birthday, and When She Refused, She Turned the Family Against Me.

My niece Charlotte had been begging for a baby buggy as a present, and when I refused she turned the whole family against me.

Children grow up in the blink of an eye, and I didnt even notice when my little boy started toddling around, eager to meet his dad. We always tried to buy the very best for our first child, even if it meant putting our own wishes on the back burner.

We splurged on a pricey, compact buggy that neatly folded into the boot of our car. It served us loyally and was looked after with great care because we had always intended to sell it later.

When Oliver finally outgrew it, we listed the buggy on a popular online marketplace. Mark, my husband, suggested a 30percent discount off the original price, but I thought the economy was tough and people were short of cash, so I decided to cut the price in half, hoping it would sell quickly and do some good.

A few hours after the ad went live, I received a cheerful call from a pleasant young woman named Poppy, who wanted to meet and see the buggy in person. I agreed, and half an hour later the doorbell rang.

When I opened the door I was taken aback: standing on the doorstep was Charlotte, the niece we hadnt spoken to for two years after a quarrel over boys. I was overjoyed to see her; I had been searching for any excuse to mend the rift.

Over a cup of tea she told me she and her partner had a little son and were struggling financially. After a frank conversation we inspected the buggy together; she liked it, and I offered to sell it to her for less than the listed price.

The next day I busied myself with preparing a welcome dinner, cooked a hearty roast, and we all sat down as a family, swapping stories from the past and enjoying the reunion.

When it came time to finalise the sale, Charlotte, sensing my willingness to compromise, hinted that it would be wonderful if I gave her a buggy as a birthday present for her child. I wasnt prepared to make such an expensive gift, so I told her straight away that I couldnt.

She took offence, called me stingy, and stormed out of the house. She later told her family, who sided with her, and the fallout left us with no contact with Charlottes side of the family.

That episode taught me a hard truth: you cant please everyone, and mixing family with business only paves the way for disappointment.
