A Woman Called and Said: “I Have a Child with Your Husband

The phone rang. An unknown number. I picked it up, hands still damp from washing the dishes.

Good morning, MrsMartha? asked a womans voice, young and calm, with a faint accent from across the western border.

Yes, speaking.

Please dont hang up this is important. Ive got a child with your husband.

At first I thought Id misheard. Then I wondered if it was a joke. By the third heartbeat my whole body felt as if itd been slapped with ice. I braced myself against the countertop so I wouldnt topple.

What did you say? I whispered.

Mark the lorry driver. He does runs to Germany. Weve been seeing each other for over a year. I thought he was single.

She spoke slowly, as if rehearsing every word. Each syllable landed like a hammer. My husband the same man who, just last night, texted me, Staying late, unloading is taking forever apparently had a second family.

The babys seven months old, the other woman continued. Im not after money. I just want you to know.

The phone slipped from my grip. The clatter shattered the silence like breaking glass. I stared at the kitchen, at the family photo on the fridge, and felt my whole life crumble in an instant.

I cant recall how long I stayed on the floor, propped against the cupboard. Time stopped. In my head the sentence echoed over and over: Ive got a child with your husband. I repeated it hoping the words would lose their sting, but each repetition cut deeper.

That evening Mark called, his voice as placid as ever.

Everythings sorted, Im back tomorrow. Need me to bring anything? he asked, as if we were just chatting about football.

I froze. For a heartbeat I wanted to say, Bring the truth, please. Instead I whispered, Come over. We need to talk.

He turned up the next day. The lorry parked outside the block and I watched from my window as he got out tired, unaware that this house was no longer his home. He walked in and, on instinct, tried to hug me. I pushed him away.

A woman from Germany called me, I said. She said shes got a child with you.

His face drained of colour. He didnt try to deny it. He sat down, stared at the floor for a few seconds, then began.

I never wanted you to find out like this. It was a mistake. Things got out of hand. His voice cracked. It started as a harmless acquaintance coffee, a chat on the depot parking lot. Sometimes a man just needs someone to listen.

And then you got her pregnant, I snapped. Thats enough.

He fell silent. He had nothing left to defend.

She didnt know I was married, he added after a pause. When she got pregnant I told her Id sort things out take a loan, help out. But I couldnt. I didnt know how to explain it to you.

My anger turned to coldness. I looked at the man Id spent more than twenty years with as if through a pane of glass.

Why? I finally asked. We had everything.

Exactly why, he murmured. We had too much routine, too little us.

For the first time I realised infidelity isnt always born of passion. Sometimes it sprouts from silence, from years of unspoken grievances. That doesnt make the pain any gentler.

He left the kitchen, the scent of cold and diesel trailing behind him. The door shut and I sank into a chair. The house was deadquiet. His coffee mug sat on the table, still warm. For a split second I wanted to smash it, to shatter every reminder of him, but I only nudged it aside.

The next day he didnt call. Not the day after, either. Then a text arrived: I need to think. Please dont close the door on me. I didnt reply.

That night I switched on the computer and found her profile a younger woman, ordinary, holding a baby boy with dark eyes so strikingly like Marks that my heart clenched.

I stared, realizing her hurt was different from mine, yet just as real. She too lived a lie, a footnote in a story hed written without our consent.

I closed the laptop, no tears fell. I was simply exhausted, as if all those years had collapsed onto me at once.

Two weeks passed. The house was too quiet, the bed too wide. At first I waited for his call, for his truck to roll up, for that disarming glance he always used to melt my anger. He never came. Instead I found a plain envelope on the table, his hurried, uneven handwriting inside.

I’m not asking for forgiveness, the letter began. I just want you to know I never planned this. I never meant to lead a double life. It happened. Im ashamed I lacked the courage to tell you the truth. The child is mine. Ill support them, but I dont want to intrude on their life. Ill come back if youll let me.

I read it over and over. Each line sounded different sometimes remorse, sometimes excuse. I cant say whether the child is mine hurt more than Ill come back. How do you return to a place you yourself burnt?

A few days later he turned up at the door, thinner, grey at the temples. He stared at me with the same gaze that once made the world feel small. In his hands was a bag, as if he were ready for anything.

I know I dont deserve this, he said. But I cant live without you.

I said nothing. I let him in. He sat at the kitchen table, the very one where wed always shared morning tea. We sat in silence for a long while. Finally I asked, And her?

She knows Im back, he replied softly. She didnt want to stop me.

Nothing was resolved. No decision, no promise. Just an emptiness hanging between us, unnamed.

Since then we sleep in separate rooms. He still cooks, cleans, fixes tiny things he never used to notice. Im learning to live with the fact that some things simply cant be patched together, no matter how hard you try.

Sometimes, when I switch off the lights at night, I think of that boy with Marks eyes. I wonder if hell ever want to know his father. And whether Ill ever be able to forgive him before he does.

Im not sure I can love that man any more. What I do know is that I cant keep living a lie. And, as painful as it is, thats the first step toward something genuine.
