Im 60 now. I no longer expect friends or relatives to visit my home.
At this age, Ive come to realise Im unlikely to see friends or family pop round anymore. Many people close to me have decided that Im rather standoffish or proud, but honestly, Im not fussed about what others think of me.
The biggest reason Ive stopped having people over is my own laziness. Keeping the house guest-ready wore me out. It wasnt just tidying up there was always food to sort out too. These days, I neither have the means nor the energy for all that. Theres always a cosy café if you fancy a catch-up over tea. Why does it always have to be at home?
The other reason is all the negative vibes. Not every visitor comes with a happy heart. Why should I take on other peoples troubles? After every gathering, Id feel drained and low. I didnt want to keep sacrificing my own peace. Ever since I stopped opening my front door to everyone, the nightmares and sleepless nights have vanished.
To be honest, being retired and rattling around the house gets dull. Id much rather get out, see new places, and give myself a break. Why should I moan about things, or pull everyone back to mine? After they all leave, Im left with the cleaning and worrying whether I played the good host or not.
There are so many lovely spots in our town where you can have a delightful time. In this day and age, theres really no need to spend birthdays or anniversaries behind four walls at home with friends. I want to enjoy myself, not run around all day with a broom and a dishcloth.
Now, my home is my own little sanctuary. Theres simply no room here for unwanted people. Some might say Im an unsociable grump, but I see it differently.
I wonder if anyone else out there feels the same way as I do?
