28April
Im sitting at the kitchen table, the kettle long since gone cold, and trying to make sense of the chaos that has taken over my life this week. My daughterinlaw Emma has called me in a panic. Tell Kieran to come right now! she begged, her voice shaking. All three of her little ones have a fever, theyre whining, and she cant get them to the urgent care on her own. If you could drive over, it would help, she pleaded.
My heart thumped hard as I tried to calm myself, hoping my words wouldnt add to Emmas anxiety. I stared at the silent screen of my phone, my fingers fumbling for Kierans number in the contacts. Three sick children, Emma alone, and her husband at work. It felt like the whole world had narrowed down to this single, urgent request.
The first ring, then the second, and finally Kieran answered.
Hey, Mum, he said briskly.
Kieran, love, its an emergency, I managed, my voice trembling. Emma just called. All three kids are ill and need to see a doctor right away. Her husband cant get time off work. Could you drive over and take the little ones?
Silence hung in the air, heavy with tension. I could hear his breathing and some background chatter.
Honestly, Mum, thats impossible today, he sighed. Its Annas birthday and weve booked a restaurant weeks ago. The drive to Emmas place across town is a nightmare in this traffic. We wont make the reservation in time, so I cant.
My hand clenched around the phone, my palm slick with sweat. Could he really be turning his back on us?
Kieran, do you hear me? The children are sick! Your own nieces! Emma cant manage three cranky toddlers on her own. They need a doctor now! I tried to keep my voice steady, but it cracked.
I understand, Mum, but we have plans. We cant drop everything because of this. Maybe call a taxi, or you and dad could help? He sounded detached, as if the situation were a minor inconvenience.
I sank into a chair, my legs giving out. Dads at work! I snapped, finally losing my composure. I cant possibly look after three ill kids by myself! Cant you see how basic this is?
Kieran, I cant. Im sorry, he said sharply, his tone cold. Its not my problem. The kids are Emmas responsibility. Shell have to sort it herself.
Anger surged through me like a wave. How can you say that? Its your family! Your sister! You cant just abandon a relative when they need you!
I said I cant! Were about to leave, goodbye, he cut off, the line clicking.
The short beeps of the call ended in a ringing echo. I stared at the black screen, my hands trembling. I dialed again, desperation tightening my throat. No answer. The silence was deafening.
Inside, a fire of fury burned. How could my own son behave like this? I tried my sisterinlaw, Anna, hoping she might persuade her husband.
Hello, Evelyn? Anna answered almost immediately.
Anna, dear, I began, forcing calm, why wont you ask Kieran to help? These are his nieces! Emmas struggling alone. You know Im a mother, you understand.
Anna sighed, her voice flat. Evelyn, the parents are supposed to look after their children. Theres a taxi, an ambulance if its an emergency. The kids arent infants any more. Emma is an adult, shell manage.
Her words cut deeper than Kierans refusal. Anna, you cant imagine trying to get three sick, fussy toddlers into a taxi! Theyre tiny! Emma cant do it by herself!
Its her children, Evelyn, Anna replied, indifferent. We have our own evening planned. We dont want to ruin it over other peoples problems.
Frustration turned to rage. Then keep your future children to yourselves and stop expecting us to help! I shouted, slamming the handset down.
The next days drifted by like a fog. I didnt call Kieran again; he remained silent. I tried not to think about the incident, but the sting of his rejection lingered, gnawing at me night after night. I lay awake, replaying the conversation, wondering where Id gone wrong as a mother, how Id raised someone so cold.
My husband tried to talk to me, but I brushed him off. I needed to sort this out on my own, to understand what had broken.
On the fourth evening, my patience finally snapped. I decided I had to see Kieran facetoface, to look into his eyes and demand an answer. When I arrived at his flat, Anna opened the door, surprised but silent, stepping aside as I entered without even taking off my coat.
Wheres Kieran? I asked sharply.
In the bedroom, she said, pointing.
I pushed open the door. Kieran met my stare. For a brief instant something flickered in his eyes, then it hardened into an unreadable mask.
Mum, whats happened? he asked, raising an eyebrow.
How could you? I shouted, my voice cracking, the four days of suppressed anger exploding. How could you turn away from your own sisters children? I didnt raise you to be selfish and heartless!
He stood, his expression still calm, almost indifferent, which only fanned the flames inside me.
Mum, you could have ordered a taxi yourself, he replied, shrugging. Drive over to Emma, help with the kids. Im not going to drop everything for the first call.
He paused, looking straight at me.
Did you forget how Emma stopped talking to us after we bought that flat? Shes been complaining about people, thats all. Since we moved in, shes been distant, not answering calls, even the neighbours gossip. And now, suddenly, she needs help?
I was at a loss for words. My throat tightened, words stuck.
Its its just I stammered, searching for something to say. Emma lives in a rented flat with three kids.
You and Anna live in your own twobedroom house, no kids. Of course shes upset. I didnt know it was a problem what she talks about?
Kieran squinted, his jaw set. Anna stood in the doorway, arms crossed, her face unreadable.
She talks a lot, says nasty things about Ana. As for the flat, thats not her concern, Kieran said coldly.
We earned that flat ourselves, Anna. No one helped us. Let Emma sort her own problems. Dont drag my family into it because of you.
I stepped closer, fists clenched without realizing. What are you saying? Shes your sister! Family!
No, Mum, Kieran snapped, his voice rising. My family is Anna. Emma should have thought ahead!
She chose to have three children! No one forced her! Im not obliged to drop everything the moment she calls! I shouted, tears blazing.
Youre selfish! I accused. You only think of yourself! Your sister can barely handle the kids, and you cant even help once!
To help? Why should I? Shes been silent to me for six months. We stopped speaking. How could I not notice? Kieran replied, a bitter smile forming. You only ever worry about Emma.
He took a shallow breath, his tone softening. What am I even doing here? You see only Emma, always. Im just an empty space for you.
Youre heartless! How can you say that? I turned away, unable to meet his gaze. I didnt raise you like this! I taught you to look after each other!
I bolted from the flat, stopped on the stairwell, breathing hard. Inside, everything felt like it was on fire. How could my own son speak to me like that?
The cold night air hit my face as I walked toward the bus stop, the thoughts swirling. Where had I gone wrong? How had I raised such an egodriven man? Why couldnt he understand that family means helping one another, that you never turn your back on kin?
Deep down, a tiny, nagging voice echoed Kierans words about Emma and the flat. Maybe she had pushed us away, maybe Id been blind to her struggles. Maybe Id been demanding, expecting him to drop everything for her, forgetting his own life with Anna.
I paused on the pavement, strangers passing me on both sides. Could Kieran be right? Was I partly to blame for this rift? I shook my head, refusing to accept that. I am a mother; I know whats right for my children. I have always known.
Yet doubt settled like a small stone in my chest, growing with each step toward the bus. It gnawed, expanding, becoming more insistent.
I boarded the minibus, pressed my forehead against the window. Outside, the town rolled byhouses, cars, people going about their lives. Inside me, something had cracked forever. Something had changed.
I dont know if Ill ever fix this. Maybe Ill find the right words tomorrow, maybe the family will become a family again. Or perhaps its already too late. Only time will tell.
