Dear Diary,
My husband gave me a truly regal birthday present: right in the middle of the party his pregnant lover called me.
Emilywell, that was mehad felt on cloudnine ever since I met the man I wanted to spend my life with. Every date with him seemed like a fairytale, bright and effortless. He showered me with bouquets and little gifts, and all the girlfriends I had would have swooned at my luckonly Susan kept repeating, Hes with you because youve got money and he needs it. I tried not to let her words creep in, and I clung to my happiness.
Six months after we started seeing each other, I introduced him to my parents. At first they werent thrilled; my father had imagined me marrying the son of his longstanding business partner. Yet, after a few conversations, they gave their blessing and everything went smoothly.
Within a year we were officially husband and wife. Our wedding gathered just over a hundred guests. My parents wedding gift was a flat in the heart of London, and from our twentiethfloor balcony we could almost see the whole world beneath our feet.
Dad quickly found a brilliant position for my husband in his firm, and soon the lad became my fatherinlaws deputy, handling key projects. As he proved his worth, my father grew fond of him, eventually telling me he now felt secure about the companys future with such a capable secondincommand.
In the beginning James and I lived just for ourselves, jetsetting abroad for holidaysthree or four countries a year. Then my parents began urging us to think about children, and the idea of an heir crept into our conversations.
Months slipped by with the pregnancy test stubbornly showing a single line. Concern set in, so we both went for full examinations. The results revealed a problem on my side.
I embarked on treatment, spending weeks in pricey clinics and travelling to specialists across the country, yet nothing worked. I endured several rounds of IVF, each costing upwards of £10000, but the outcome remained the same. By then I was thirty, and the dream of a child felt ever more distant.
We decided to celebrate my birthday surrounded by family. Jamess mother and sister flew in, and my parents arrived with a couple of other relatives. Halfway through the banquet, my phone rang. The room was noisy, so I slipped out onto the terrace. An unknown number flashed on the screen. I assumed it was a mate, but a strangers voice filled the speaker.
The woman introduced herself and then said, Emily, I know you well, so please listen calmly. Your husband and I have been together for a long time and love each other deeply. Were expecting a baby soon, and hes ecstatic. He told me you cant have children, so Im asking you to let him goonly with me can he truly be happy.
I felt my world tilt. I gathered myself, returned to the guests, and forced a smile, though the joy had evaporated. When we were alone with my parents, I recounted the call. James turned as pale as a sheet, unable to explain. My father erupted, shouting James out of the house. When I got to our block, a drunken James was waiting by the driveway.
He tried to convince me hed been bewitched, that the woman had simply dazzled him. He then claimed hed been looking for a surrogate to carry our child, that hed left the woman after that. I believed him and let him back inside. The next morning I phoned my father, telling him wed patched things up and that everything was fine, though a knot of unease still sat in my stomach.
Now I sit here, wrestling with the decision of whether to let him walk away with that woman, especially since a baby is on the way for them. I love James, but I know Ill suffer whichever path I choose. I have no idea what to do.
EmilyI decided to seek advice from a trusted friend and trust whatever truth my heart ultimately reveals.
