I grew up always trying not to let my mum down and somehow, without realising, I started losing my marriage.
My mum always seemed to know the right thing to do. At least, thats how it felt.
Even as a little girl, I learned to read her mood by the sound of her voice, by the way she closed the door, and by her silences. If she was happy, all was well. If she wasnt then I had done something wrong.
I dont ask for much, shed say. Just dont disappoint me.
That just weighed more than any rule.
When I was older and married, I thought my life would finally be mine to live. My husband was gentle and patient. He avoided arguments. At first, my mum liked him well enough. But soon, she started having an opinion about everything.
Why are you home so late?
Dont you think you work too much?
He really doesnt help you enough.
I used to laugh these comments off. I told my husband that she just worried about me. Then I started explaining myself to her. And after a while, I began to take her into account with everything I did.
Without noticing, I started living with two voices in my mind.
One belonged to my husband soft-spoken, sensible, just wanting closeness.
The other was always my mothers certain, demanding.
Whenever he wanted us to go away together, suddenly my mum would be unwell.
If we made plans, she needed me for something.
When my husband would tell me he missed me, Id say,
Please try to understand, I cant leave her on her own.
And he did try. For a long time.
Until one evening he said something that unsettled me far more than an argument would have.
I feel like Im the third person in this marriage.
I snapped back. I defended her. I defended myself. I said he was exaggerating, that it wasnt fair to make me choose.
But deep down, I knew I already had. I just hadnt admitted it.
We started falling silent. Going to bed back-to-back. Talking about chores, never about us. And when tensions grew, my mum always knew.
I told you, shed say. Men are all like that.
And I believed her. Out of habit.
Until one day I came home, and he was gone.
He hadnt left in a rage. He left the keys and a note:
I love you, but I dont know how to live with your mum always between us.
I sat on the bed and, for the first time, I didnt know whom to call. My mum or him.
I phoned my mum.
Well, what did you expect? she said. I warned you…
Something broke inside me then.
I realised that all my life Id been afraid of letting one person down and Id lost another, the one who simply wanted me beside him.
I cant blame my mum entirely. She loved me the only way she knew how.
But I was the one who never set a boundary.
I was the one who confused duty with love.
Now Im learning something I should have understood long ago:
that being a child doesn’t mean staying small forever.
And that a marriage cant survive when theres always a third voice.
Have you ever had to choose between not letting your parent down and saving your family?
