How many times did I tell him not to marry her? Right before the wedding, I practically begged him not to go through with it. Did he listen? Of course nothe was hopelessly in love. Now look where that’s got him.
Just a few days ago, my son rang me up. The moment I heard his voice, I knew he was ill. You cant fool your own mother. My son asked me to come round, explaining that his wife, fully aware he was unwell, had packed her bags and gone off to her friends. He had no one to brew him a cup of tea or make him some soup.
On top of that, she wasnt even answering his calls. Even though it was late, I rushed over. On the way, I popped into the chemist and picked up some medicine. I couldnt help but think about her. Shed left her poorly husband and gone off to have fun. My boy was in a terrible state. When I saw him, he looked so rough that my first instinct was to call an ambulance, but he pleaded with me to hold off.
He was completely worn out. There wasnt a thing in the flat. Luckily, Id brought medicine and grabbed a few bits to eat. I could hardly keep myself from giving her a piece of my mind. What sort of woman does that? Leaves her husband ill, no medicine in the house except her slimming tablets, and the fridge echoed back at me it was so empty. I made a cup of tea for my boy and dashed to the corner shop for some broth.
Only after hed rested and eaten something did he seem to perk up. His fever finally went down. Thats when his lovely wife strolled in at three in the morning, reeking of booze. She must have had a jolly old night. She didnt even bother listening when I tried to explain about the medication. For my sons sake, I kept my temper in check. But truth be told, he looked close to kicking off himself
Looking back, its painfully clear: love can blind you to someones true character. Next time Ill trust my instinctsand I hope my son learns to, as well.
