Last weekend, my wife and I headed over to her parents house for a family dinner. Thats where the whole misunderstanding unfolded.
It kicked off in typical fashion: we settled around the dining table and chatted about all sorts of things. Before long, the conversation veered toward my jobsomething my wife herself brought up.
It wasnt entirely without reason. Recently, wed been talking about building a swimming pool at my parents place. Wed wanted to do this for ages, and this year my wife seemed determined not to delay any longer.
We were also thinking about swapping out the old car before the winter set in. Plus, wed hoped for a seaside holiday next summer, since we hadnt been for three years. As it stands, Im the only one in our family earning a wage.
Ive always been quite content with my jobIm not complaining. But unfortunately, the company has hit a rough patch, let go of some staff, and cut salaries for the rest of us indefinitely.
So I explained to everyone that we do have some savings, but theyd only stretch to a modest holiday and maybe the most basic car on the market, assuming prices dont jump.
My wife, however, insisted the pool at her parents house was the top priority, overruling the plans we discussed. I disagreed with her view, and the debate ended with her accusing me of being lazy and lacking motivation to find a better paying job, so we could afford everything.
The family seemed to echo her complaint around the table. I couldnt keep my composure and abruptly pointed out that we already help her parents out financially every month. In my frustration, I blurted out that the whole dinner had probably been laid out almost entirely at my expense.
I know I shouldnt have said that, but the damage was done. All I had left was some lukewarm soup staring back at me as my wife launched into a passionate tirade. She was so offended, I learned a few things about myself Id never heard before. I didnt stick around; I got up and left without a word.
When I got home, I packed up her things and took them back to her parents. I dont think its right for my wife to have conversations like that or act the way she did. I believe its unacceptable. Now Im back at home, feeling lost and unsure where to turn.
Looking back, Ive realised that I need to be more patient and tactful, especially when tensions run high. Sometimes, keeping calm is better than speaking my mind in anger.
