My Brother Demanded the Money I Had Spent Years Saving, and When I Said No, Our Mother Responded in the Most Appalling Way Imaginable

Today, I find myself living with my mum in London, juggling two jobs just to get by. All my wages go towards my own groceries and utility bills, since my mums entire pension supports my older brother. I work tirelessly, saving every pound I can, hoping to one day afford my own flata dream that keeps me going even as I try to balance paying bills and building up enough savings for a place of my own. Despite the daily challenges, I stick to my goal, believing that hard work and discipline will eventually pay off.

A little while ago, my brother asked to borrow money for a deposit abroad. Deep down, I knew he wouldnt pay me back, so I declined calmly. I told him I needed the money to buy a flat myself. Unfortunately, he didnt take my refusal well and immediately complained to Mum.

Financially, my brothers situation is pretty shaky. He drives a taxi and does odd jobs like handyman repairs, so his income is all over the place. He and his wife tend to spend what little money they have on things that arent necessaryexpensive takeaways and luxury items no one needs. With three children and no stable home, they barely scrape by.

Meanwhile, I focus on being responsible, saving and managing my expenses. Im content with my old phone, while my brothers wife always wants the latest model on finance. When I refused to lend him money for the overseas deposit, he got offended and told Mum.

Mum tried to persuade me to help, even though my brother hadnt repaid previous debts. She made a generous offer: if I gave him the money, shed sign over her flat to me. Still, I turned it downI didnt want to wait and inherit my mums property; I wanted independence on my own terms.

Although Mum eventually respected my decision, things became complicated when my brother and his family decided to move in with her to save money, disregarding my situation and leaving me without a home. Mum assumed that, since I had some savings, Id be fine. My brother hasnt spoken to me since.

Despite the difficulties and family tensions, I dont feel guilty about how things played out. I acted according to my values, putting my future and dreams first and managing the money Ive worked so hard to earn. Through this experience, Ive learned the importance of standing by what you believe, especially when it comes to protecting your own happiness and financial stability.
