My Daughter Has a Lazy Boyfriend Who Lives in Her Flat and Doesn’t Pay the Bills

My husband and I are a respectable English family. This is our first marriage and we’ve been together for twenty-five years. We’ve never argued in front of our daughter; instead, we’ve shown each other love and care. All in all, we’ve had a happy marriage. I always hoped that, by setting a good example, our daughter would want the same kind of happiness for herself and would build a successful life of her own. As people often say, children tend to follow in their parents footsteps.

But this is where our worries begin. Our daughter isnt married yet, but she does have a boyfriend. Two years ago, my mother passed away and left her flat in Nottingham to us. My husband and I decided that wed pass it on to our daughter. Now weve just found out that shes living there with her boyfriend.

We dont mind her having her own life. The problem is her boyfriendhes absolutely dreadful. He doesnt lift a finger around the house; he wont even do the most basic jobs. If the tap leaks or a lightbulb needs changing, our daughter immediately rings her father for help. Weve asked her several times why her boyfriend doesnt help out, but she never gives us a straight answer. She just keeps promising that hell start helping soon.

And now, to make matters worse, weve discovered hes unemployed. That means he doesnt contribute anything and its all on our daughters shoulders. She works two jobs just to keep things afloat. I honestly dont think her boyfriend really cares about her.

I told her I think shes made the wrong choice. But she doesnt seem bothered. She believes hell change and things will work out. She loves him. And I love my daughterit pains me to see her like this.
