Its often said that if you marry a truly clever man, hell never be unfaithful and will always care deeply for his wifeat least, thats what my mother and grandmother used to tell me. So, by the time I was ready for marriage, Id ruled out anyone who struck me as unreliable or involved in anything dubious. Honestly, I just couldnt see the point in even starting something with the wrong sort. Why bother?
As luck would have it, I met Philip through friends. Hed graduated from Imperial College Londona sharp, ambitious man with a scientific mind. I, myself, had studied English at university, and although our interests differed, we found plenty in common. We began by chatting, then spent more time together, and before long, I was properly taken with him. After a year he proposed, and I happily accepted. We moved into the flat in Richmond left to me by my grandmother. The cosy one-bedroom suited us fine, at least while it was just the two of us.
Soon, I fell pregnant, and we welcomed a sonthen, a year on, a daughter. Space was tight and our finances werent much to speak of. Needing more stability, Philip threw himself into business. I stayed home to care for the children and always had his back, supporting him through thick and thin. There were times we were down to our last pound, completely skint. Still, we didnt give up, believing better times would come.
Years of graft followed, but eventually, our business picked up. Life improvedwe could afford to send the children to the best schools, and then onto excellent universities. I had the freedom to explore my interests and hobbies, too.
Philip had his pursuits as wellweekends away with mates or the odd trip rambling through the countryside. It never bothered me; he provided for us and deserved his own space. Our marriage was built on respect and affection, and truly, we were happy. Life seemed settled, peaceful. I never could have guessed how suddenly things could unravel.
One weekend, Philip fell ill. The ambulance rushed him off, and only hours later, he was gone. Just like thatvanished from our lives. My children and I were not only overwhelmed by grief but by a shock none of us expected. It turned out that for five years, Philip had a relationship with a woman young enough to be his daughter, and those supposed holidays he took were actually spent with her. He left her everythingour business, the house in Surrey, the cottage in the Cotswolds, the car. All of it. We were left with nothing.
To say I was devastated is an understatement. How could someone do such a thing? How could he walk the earth knowing his own children and wife would be left without even a roof over their heads? Moving forward feels impossible at times.
But if life has taught me anything through this heartbreak, its that cleverness and outward appearance can be deceptive. Its not intelligence, social standing, or even reliability that hold a family togetherbut honesty, kindness, and genuine care. We must never lose sight of the true nature of love, for in the end, its the only solid foundation on which happiness can be built.
