Come on in, Mum, weve been waiting for you, I said as my son Edward led me inside, and my daughter-in-law took my coat and handed me a pair of slippers. For a moment, she smiled warmly, but I caught a flicker of worry on her face.
When I moved into the sitting room to join the family, Emily gave a small nod towards the floor. Thats when I noticed it toodamp footprints trailing across the carpet. We exchanged glances but decided it was best not to mention it straight away.
Edward and Emily had wonderful news; theyd recently welcomed twins. The babies were a bit bigger now, so theyd invited our nearest and dearest for a small celebration.
As a retired pensioner, I knitted some lovely little outfits for the babies because my pension hardly stretched enough to buy anything decent in the shops. I had insisted on coming another time, but Edward and Emily wouldnt have it; they said this was a day I couldnt miss.
The boys had been named George and Henry. I was thrilled theyd chosen those names, as my late husband had been a George and my father a Henry. It warmed me to see our family traditions carried on.
Oh, hes just adorablehe looks just like you, Emily! And this one, well, hes the spitting image of you, Edward. Or maybe Ive muddled them uptheyre as alike as two peas in a pod! I found myself dashing around the crib, trying to tell them apart, but it was no usetheir little faces were identical.
Edward and Emily just laughed, enjoying my delight and confusion over the twins.
After the others had gone, I started to get my things together. Emily glanced at my son, and Edward suggested, Mum, why dont you stay the night? Its getting latethere might not be any buses. Plus, you could help Emily with the boys tonight; they need a bath and to get settled for bed.
All right, dear, if you think Id be any help, I agreed, smiling.
I helped clear the table and did the washing up, then we set off, all three of us, to bathe the babies. The happiness in Emilys eyes was plain to see. Emily handed me one of the boys, but I hesitated, worried Id drop himhe seemed so tiny and fragile.
You managed to bring up Edward without ever dropping him, didnt you? Emily teased.
Oh, that was donkeys years agoIve forgotten how to even hold a baby! I fretted.
Still, Emily put Henry gently in my arms, and the little fellow fell sound asleep as if he sensed he was completely safe. Emily rocked George in her own arms.
They set me up with a room to myself so I could get a good rest, but sleep wouldnt come. I stayed awake, ears keen for any little whimpers from George or Henry. I mustve drifted off at last near dawn, utterly worn out.
When I awoke, Emily had already made breakfast and the babies were still asleep.
Wheres Edward? I asked, finding only Emily in the kitchen.
Hell be back in a minute, Mum. Come and sit down, have some tea.
A few minutes later, Edward came through the door, holding a big box.
Mum, this is for you. Go on, open it, he urged with a broad smile.
I opened the box to find a brand new pair of boots inside. I was too stunned to speak.
These must have cost a fortuneI cant possibly let you spend so much on me, I said with tears threatening to spill over.
Theyre not more precious than you, Mum. Please, try them on and wear them well, Edward said, giving me a gentle grin.
Slipping my feet into the boots, I was overwhelmedhow could they have known that my old boots were splitting apart and beyond repair? Id never said a word, but I couldnt afford new ones on my pension.
Suddenly one of the boys let out a cry, and off I dashed in my new boots to tend to him.
Youre wonderful. Thank you, Emily, Edward whispered, pulling her into a hug. If it hadnt been for you, Id never have thought of it.
It was hardly a mystery, love. Your mum came in yesterday with soaked feet. I noticed the footprints, saw the state of her old boots and put two and two together. Three thousand pounds is a lot for us, but well manage. For your mum, thats impossible. She deserves to be comfortable, Emily replied, giving him an affectionate squeeze.
I felt so deeply warmed, whether by the boots or by the feeling that I was truly needed by my family, Im not sure. But I learned that love isnt just in big gestures, its in noticing when someone needs you and answering with kindness.
