So, let me tell you what happened. My names Grace Bennett.
To my husband, Thomas Bennett, I was just your ordinary wife. Loyal, dependable, nothing flashyjust the sort of woman people tend to take for granted over time, you know? The kind who becomes invisible in her own home.
But what he never realised was that long before we even got married, I already owned Rosewood Grange, this absolutely stunning country estate on the Cornish coast, not far from St Ives. Id inherited it from my grandmother and, for years, kept it hush-hush.
I only ever wanted someone to love me for who I am, not for what I have.
Reality hit rather sharply, in the end.
One Friday morning, Thomas told me he had a business trip. Management seminar, he said, nothing interesting.
In truth, hed actually booked a swanky weekend away with his mistress, Holly Winters at my own hotel.
Talk about cruel ironybecause I happened to be on site that very day, turning up for one of my surprise visits. I like to wander the grounds without notice, dressed simplylinen shorts, pale t-shirt, comfy sandals.
Thats when I spotted them.
Thomas and Holly, hand-in-hand, all relaxed and close. She had on this expensive-looking swimsuit, oversized sunglasses, and wore that brazen confidence you only see in people who truly think the world is their plaything.
This place is unreal, she whispered. Are you sure we can afford it?
Thomas grinned. Dont worry. I used Graces card. She never checks. Far too trusting.
I felt chills run through me.
There he was, blatantly treating his mistress on my card, in my hotel.
They made their way up to reception. As they passed me near the gardens, Holly shot me a disdainful look.
Excuse me! she snapped. Service! Grab my suitcase. Its heavy.
I just stood there. Her smile became forced. Are you deaf? Thomas, look at this member of staff
Thomas turned around.
He went pale as a sheetcompletely lost for words but the worst was yet to come.
Grace?
Holly frowned. You know her?
I smiled, calm as anything. Hello, Thomas. So hows the seminar going?
He stammered. What are you doing here? Were you following me?
Holly actually laughed. Wait this is your wife? Makes sense now, why you wanted a change. She looks like she works here.
Then she turned back to the front desk. I want her out. Shes ruining my stay. Also, Ill need your best suite. Now.
The receptionist gave me a worried glance. I just nodded slightly.
Of course, madam. Right this way to the VIP wing.
Holly flashed this victorious smile. She and Thomas were led away, two security guards in tow, with me following at a distance.
Holly soon started to look around, confused. Where are you taking us? This isnt the way.
We walked through the service corridor, out past the staff exit and car park. She stopped, sharply. Is this a joke?
Youve arrived, I said.
Excuse me?! I want the manager!
And then the general manager arrived, sharp suit and all, completely unruffled. He glanced at me, nodded, and addressed everyone.
Good afternoon, Mrs Bennett. Mrs Bennett is the owner of Rosewood Grange. All accounts related to Mr Bennett have been closed, effective immediately.
Holly went ghost-white. I took off my sunglasses.
Holly, I dont work here. I own the estate.
Then I turned to Thomas. The real naivety is betraying your wife with her own money at her own hotel.
He slumped. Grace, please
No, I said.
And to security, I said, Please escort them out. And bar them, permanently.
That evening, I stood by the cliffs, glass in hand, watching the sun melt into the sea. Alone, yes, but free. A few weeks later, I threw a gala for the launch of Grange Ladiesa programme for women making a fresh start.
It wasnt just betrayal. It was a wake-up call. Sometimes, losing the wrong man is the only way to reclaim your place in the world.
