After Buying a Beachside Home, Long-Lost Relatives Suddenly Resurface

After buying a house by the sea, our relatives suddenly remembered we existed.

I never thought anyone would accuse my husband and me of being arrogant. We’ve always led a modest life, never trying to stand out. Both my husband and I are nearly 50 years old, and this is a second marriage for both of us. I don’t have children, it just turned out that way, but my husband has an adult daughter. We’ve been together for about a decade now and have built a cozy and harmonious life.

John lived in his own house outside the city, while I had an apartment in town. After we got married, I moved in with him, and it turned out to be a good decision. Life in the countryside quickly grew on me: the quiet, the steady pace, the closeness to nature. We weren’t fans of noisy gatherings and seldom visited people, nor did we have frequent visitors. The only regular guest was John’s daughter, Emma, with whom we had warm relations.

Once, shortly after our wedding, we took a trip to the seaside. The journey left an unforgettable impression on our hearts. The sea breeze, the sound of the waves, endless beaches – it all seemed like paradise on earth. It was then we wondered: what if we moved closer to the sea when we retired? This dream seemed distant and almost unattainable, but fate had other plans.

John’s uncle unexpectedly passed away, leaving him a three-bedroom flat in the city. This became our opportunity to bring our dream closer. We decided to sell the inherited property, leave our jobs, and move to a coastal town. We entrusted the sale of John’s house to his daughter, Emma. She quickly found buyers and wired us part of the proceeds; my husband decided to gift the remaining sum to his daughter.

That’s how we ended up in our cozy cottage by the sea. We found jobs without much hassle, and life settled in. However, our peaceful existence was disrupted by unexpected attention from relatives. As soon as rumors of our move circulated, we were swarmed with visitors: brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and even distant relatives we barely remembered.

At first, we were pleased with the company, but soon noticed a troubling trend. Many would arrive uninvited, empty-handed, expecting full hospitality from us. They anticipated free lodging, meals, and entertainment. After their departures, we found ourselves tidying up, washing piles of bed linens, and replenishing our food supplies.

What was particularly unsettling was that some relatives arrived with children and even grandchildren, without giving us any prior notice. Our home turned into a free boarding house. John and I felt exhausted and taken advantage of.

We decided it was time to set boundaries. Close relatives like John’s sister and her daughter, and Emma’s family, were always welcome. They would visit briefly, bring treats, and help around the house. But for everyone else, we had to shut the door. We made it clear that we couldn’t accommodate unexpected guests or provide for them.

This decision sparked a wave of resentment. We were labeled as conceited, accused of having grown too proud and of turning our backs on family. But we felt no guilt. When we lived in the countryside, none of these people showed any interest in us. Now, knowing about our house by the sea, they suddenly remembered we existed.

John and I have no regrets about our decision. Our home is our fortress, and we have the right to decide who to let in and when. Life by the sea has taught us to appreciate the simple joys: morning walks on the beach, sunsets by the shore, the sound of the waves. And we will not let anyone disrupt our harmony and peace.
