Alright, lads, the fishing can wait,” Victor decided, grabbing the fishing net. “Weve got to save the poor thing.”

Victor was steering the boat across the calm waters of Lake Windermere, while his passengersholidaymakers from Londonenthusiastically cast their lines. It was a perfect day: the sun shone brightly, a gentle breeze rustled, and the fish were biting like mad.

“Victor, mate, whats that floating over there?” one of the tourists suddenly called out, pointing into the distance.

The captain squinted, peering at the water.

“Looks like a bird Wait, nosomething odd.”

As the boat drew closer, everyone exchanged surprised glances. There, barely keeping afloat, was a catsoaking wet, ginger, and utterly exhausted, paddling desperately.

“Well, Ill be!” Victor shook his head. “Howd he end up here? The shores half a mile away!”

“Maybe he fell off another boat?” one tourist suggested.

“Or got caught in the current,” another added.

The cat let out a pitiful meow and tried to swim toward them, but his strength was fading fast.

“Right then, lads, the fishll have to wait,” Victor said, snatching the net. “Were saving this poor sod.”

Hoisting the cat aboard wasnt easyhe panicked, clawed, and thrashed about. But eventually, they managed to scoop him up gently in the net and lift him onto the deck.

“Poor things knackered,” Victor sighed, wrapping the shivering cat in an old jacket. “How longs he been out here?”

The cat huddled in a corner of the deck, eyeing everyone with wary, frightened eyes. His wet fur stuck out in all directions, whiskers twitching.

“What a handsome lad,” one of the tourists wives cooed. “And still young, too.”

“Best get him to a vet,” Victor said, concerned. “Who knows how much water hes swallowed.”

The vet gave the cat a once-over and reassured them:

“Hes healthy, just worn out. Dehydrated and scaredbut hell live. Give him ten days to recover, and hell be right as rain.”

“Should we try to find his owners?” Victor asked.

“Could put up posters,” the vet said. “But honestly? Looks like a strayskinny, no collar.”

Victor took the cat home. His wife, Margaret, welcomed their unexpected guest warmly:

“Oh, youre skin and bones! Lets get some meat on you, eh?”

For the first few days, the cat hid under the sofa, only venturing out to eat. Slowly, he began exploring his new home. Within a week, he was purring when Margaret stroked his back.

“You know,” Victor said to his wife, “maybe we should keep him. Doubt anyones looking for him now.”

“I dont mind,” Margaret smiled. “Always wanted a cat. What shall we call him?”

“Lucky,” Victor answered without hesitation. “Not every cat survives an open-water swim.”

Hearing his new name, the cat lifted his head and meowed loudlyas if approving the choice.

A month later, Lucky was fully part of the family. He greeted Victor at the door, curled up on Margarets lap, and expertly begged for fish in the kitchen. The only thing he still avoided? Waterhed even approach his bowl cautiously.

“Probably traumatised,” Margaret told the neighbours. “Cant blame him, after that.”

“Or maybe it was meant to be?” their neighbour, Elizabeth, mused. “Swam straight to you, didnt he?”

Victor scratched Lucky behind the ears.

“Maybe it was. Good thing we went fishing that day. Otherwise”

The ginger cat rubbed against his hand and purred contentedly, as if to say, *Its alright. Im yours now. For good.*

And silently, Victor and Margaret agreed.

Sometimes, help given at the right moment turns into the most unexpected happiness. Sometimes, rescue comes where you least expect itand real luck just sails right up to you. The trick is not to miss the moment when someone needs you.

Because thats when something new and wonderful slips into your life. And even if the start was roughthe strongest bonds often form in the hardest times.
