Part 1
A billionaire was lost in his thoughts as he wandered down a London street when he noticed a little girl sobbing on the pavement. Around her neck hung his long-missing necklace, a family heirloom hed believed gone forever. He hurried towards her, pointing at the pendant, hands shaking. Where did you get that? he demanded. The girl, Grace, clung to it fiercely, shrinking away. Dont touch it. Its my daddys necklace.
The billionaire stopped dead. His heart pounded, the world seeming to come to a halt. Daddys necklace. Who was this child, and how could she have something that belonged only to him?
Years before, Alice had been a lovely young woman with a gentle disposition. She lived in a tiny rented flat in Manchester with her dearest friend, Charlotte. Life hadnt treated them well. Alice struggled to find steady work and often went to bed hungry, yet refused to give in to despair. She was known to say, One day, things will turn around for me.
One bright morning, Alice awoke early, hope bubbling inside her. She had an interview at a local hotel. Charlotte hugged her tightly, wishing her all the best. Go and impress them, Alice. This is your chance, I know it.
Wearing her finest clothes, Alice attended the interview. After a series of questions, she was told, Congratulations, youve got the job. Teary and overjoyed after so much disappointment, she dashed home to embrace Charlotte, both of them laughing and crying at once.
That evening, Charlotte insisted they celebrate. Lets go out tonight, she said. You deserve a bit of fun. Though hesitant, Alice eventually agreed, and the two prepared for an evening at one of Manchesters lively clubs.
That night, the club pulsed with music and laughter. Meanwhile, across town, Richard Evans, a 33-year-old millionaire, sat alone in his car, tears streaming down his face. Successful, wealthy, admiredyet he felt only misery. His closest business partner had swindled him, absconding with company funds and leaving Richard to deal with the consequences. Lost and hurting, Richard stumbled into a nightclub, seeking solace in drink.
As the night wore on, his colleagues helped him up to his private hotel suite above the club. He was barely coherent, his eyes bloodshot and mind clouded.
Back downstairs, Alicedressed simply in blacksuddenly felt unsteady. Shed taken strong painkillers earlier in the day, and now felt woozy and lightheaded. Charlotte, I need to lie down, she whispered, gripping her friends arm.
Quietly, Alice wandered upstairs, searching for somewhere to rest. Spotting an open hotel room door, she slipped inside, laid down on the bed, and quickly drifted off. She didnt know it was Richards suite.
Minutes later, Richard stumbled in. Seeing Alice, he assumed someone had arranged companionship for him. They didnt exchange words. In an haze of confusion and drink, they became intimate.
The next morning, Alice woke to a pounding head. The room was silent. Richard was gone. In a daze, she spotted a gleaming gold necklace next to the pillowa valuable piece, etched with, R. Evans. She didnt know who the man was, but instinctively tucked the necklace away. There was also a wad of cash on the table. Fighting back tears, Alice whispered, What happened to me?
She quickly dressed and rushed home. Charlotte was waiting, worried sick. Alice couldnt speak, only buried herself in her friends arms and wept.
A month passed. Alice felt constantly tired and nauseous. Anxious, she visited a local NHS clinic. After a few tests, the nurse returned with a gentle smile. Congratulations. Youre about one month pregnant.
Alice went numb. Pardon?
Youre going to have a baby.
Stunned, Alice stumbled home and collapsed, sobbing. How will I raise this child? I dont even know who the father isI never saw his face.
Pressing her hand to her stomach, she cried, Why me? I havent any money or parents. Id only just got a job. Why now, of all times?
Charlotte rushed in, seeing her friends distress. Alice, whats happened?
Im pregnant, Alice whispered.
Charlotte stared, then gently coaxed the whole story outabout the club, the dizziness, the stranger, the necklace. She blinked at the gold necklace, engraved R. Evans.
After a long silence, Charlotte said, Lets go to that club. Someone there must know something.
Though doubts remained, Alice agreed. The next afternoon, they returned. In the daylight, the club was muted and empty. They showed the necklace to the manager, who examined it and shrugged. Looks pricey, but Ive never seen it here.
They spoke to cleaners and other staff, but no one could offer a clue. Crestfallen, Alice left.
I dont know your father, she murmured to her unborn child. But I will love and protect you. I promise you that much.
Alice kept up her hotel job, swallowing her sadness in silence. Meanwhile, in his mansion in Chelsea, Richard Evans had no idea that he had left behind not just a treasured necklace but a baby growing inside a lonely young woman.
One morning, Richard was straightening his tie when he noticed something missinghis monogrammed gold necklace. He searched all around his room, even asked his housekeeper, Margaret, about it, but nothing turned up. Eventually, he gave up, thinking it had been stolen, and went on with his day.
Alices pregnancy became tougher as weeks passed. She grew exhausted and unwell, frequently faint. One afternoon, she collapsed while working. A guest complained, and her manager called Alice in. Im afraid youre dismissed. You cant keep working like this.
Shattered, Alice told Charlotte the news. Now, with a child on the way and no income, anxiety threatened to overwhelm her. But she pressed on.
Five years crawled by.
Alice was now twenty-nine, her life still far from easy, but she survived. After losing the hotel job, she worked in a small family-run café. The pay was meagre, but it kept her and her daughter afloat. Grace was a bright, lovely girlher mothers eyes and quick wit.
One night, Grace asked, Mummy, wheres my daddy? My friends all talk about their daddies.
Alices heart squeezed painfully. She dug out the gold necklace. This belonged to your dad. Its the only thing he left for us.
Graces eyes danced with wonder as Alice clasped it round her neck. Dont let anyone touch it, Alice warned softly.
I wont, Mummy, Grace promised.
Elsewhere in the city, Richard sat with his father, Sir Geoffrey Evans, discussing marriage prospects. Richard considered proposing to his girlfriend, Olivia, yet an odd emptiness haunted him. Sir Geoffrey advised that marrying would give him purpose.
Olivia, glamorous and ambitious, yearned to be Mrs Evans. One day, confiding in her friend Rachel, she complained of waiting for Richards proposal. Rachel confessed shed once pretended a pregnancy to move things along. Inspired, Olivia decided to do the same.
Shortly thereafter, she visited Richard and announced, Im having your baby.
Richard, overjoyed, threw his arms around her and began making wedding plans. Ecstatic about fatherhood, he had no inkling that in another part of London his real daughter wore his necklace to school.
One stifling afternoon, Alice became ill and feverish. She sent Grace out to buy medicine. As Grace hurried along the bustling city street, clutching her necklace and wiping her tears, a black Jaguar pulled over. Richard, lost in thought about Olivias pregnancy, glanced up and was struck by the sight of the crying child. Something about her tugged at him.
Stop the car, he told his driver.
He approached the child gently. Why are you crying?
My mummys very ill. Im going to get her medicine, she replied.
Then Richard spotted his necklace glinting on her chest. His breath caught. Where did you get this?
Dont touch, Grace said firmly. Its my daddys necklace.
Hands trembling, Richard asked, Whos your daddy?
I dont know. Mummy gave this to me.
And your mummys name?
Alice.
Richard told his driver to fetch the medicine, then quietly asked Grace if he could walk her home. Hand in hand, he followed her along a winding, unfamiliar road, his mind racing.
They reached a modest block of flats. Inside, Alice lay pale and sweating on a blanket. She looked up in confusion as Richard entered.
I found your daughter on the street, he said softly.
After making sure Alice took her medicine, Richards gaze kept returning to the necklace. Eventually, he quietly asked how shed come by it.
Alice shared the truth of that fateful nightthe celebration, her dizziness, waking to a stranger and a necklace, discovering she was pregnant.
As Richard listened, his face drained of colour. That was my necklace.
A heavy silence fell.
I was at the Luxe Club that night, he admitted. I was devastated and drunk. I came in, saw you there, and thought I thought someone had arranged it. I had no idea.
Alices voice trembled with emotion. So it was you.
Richard nodded, wracked with remorse. I cant undo what happened, but I can be here now. Grace is my daughter.
He dropped to one knee in front of Grace. Im your daddy, he whispered.
Taken aback, Alice listened as Richard begged for the chance to care for them both. That evening, his Jaguar brought Alice and Grace to the Evans home.
For the first time in years, Richard felt a deep sense of peace as he watched Alice and his daughter settle into his home.
