I used to believe that stories like this only happened in books or online, but life had a different plan for me.
I was just six when my father left my mum, my two younger twin sisters, and me quite literally overnight. Mum tried for a long time to shield us, telling me Dad was away on a business trip, but I knew deep down the truth. Eventually, she realised there was no point pretending any longer, and she said, Your dads not a part of our lives anymore.
As a child, I couldnt grasp all the grown-up complications. I was angry at him and imagined that one day he would come back for us. But he never did. Mum stayed single; she never tried to start a new chapter for herself. Looking back, I imagine things were tough for her. Who would want a divorced woman with three children? Time passed, and eventually I made my own family. Im married now with children of my own. We still live in the countryside, running a small farm and apple orchard together. The work is demanding but rewarding slowly but surely, its turning a profit.
A few months ago, I got a call from a man I didnt recognise. He insisted we needed to speak urgently. He even hinted he was interested in buying apples in bulk. Naturally, I agreed to meet. We met in my orchard, and there he was: a bald, heavyset man. He smiled awkwardly and handed me a package. Inside were some cheap sweets and a tin of instant coffee. I was puzzled. Then he said,
Im your father.
I was lost for words. All I managed was, Were you ever in prison? No. Are you here to buy apples? No. Well, goodbye then. Goodbye
He left his bag on the bench. I ran after him and returned his cheap gifts. I wondered what exactly he was hoping for. I warned my sisters that Dad might turn up, and sure enough, he visited them with the same bag. How can someone disappear for twenty-four years, then come back with a tin of coffee? I still can’t make sense of it.
Maybe thats the lesson: sometimes, trying to fix the past is impossible, and no small gesture can erase whats gone. The best you can do is hold onto those who stayed, and keep building your future with them.
