Daughter-in-Law with Baggage

**A Daughter-in-Law with “Baggage”**

“Emily, did your son get married? I saw him with a woman and a little boy. Did he take on someone elses baggage?” the neighbour asked.

Emily was taken aback. “No, but Id be happy if he did.”

Her son, Thomas, still lived with her and hadnt mentioned marriage.

“Tom, someone said they saw you with a woman and a child. Are you seeing someone?” she asked when she got home.

“Bloody busybodiescant keep anything to themselves. Didnt want to tell you yet. Shes a widowher husband died two years agoraising a son on her own. We met through work, and things just happened. Dont worry, I wont bring her home.”

Emily sighed. “Shame. I wouldnt have minded about the boy.”

“Im not raising someone elses kid. I want my own.”

“Youre 34, Tom. How long will you stay single?”

“Ive got time. You want me miserable?”

“Miserable? A family is happiness, son.”

Thomas owned a flat but preferred living with his mum, renting his place out to save for a new car. It was convenientfree meals, laundry done. The women he dated, put off by his living situation, never pushed for marriage. Perfect.

One evening, Emily spotted him with the womanpetite, fair-haired, lovely. She bumped into her at the shops.

“Sorry, you must be Lucy? Ive seen you with my son. Im Emily.”

“Hello. Yes, I know Thomas. Nice to meet you.”

“Fancy a coffee?”

They sat in a café.

“Thomas mentioned your son. How old is he?”

“Five. His names Harry. After my husband died, his parents sold our flathis mother owned itand kicked us out. I had no family, just my grans old cottage. Sold it, put the money down on a flat here. Work as a sales manager. Thats my life.”

Emily liked her instantlygentle, composed.

“Thomas never mentioned you. Id have loved to meet sooner.”

“Maybe he thought the baggage would put you off. Or maybe hes not ready. But were happy as we are.”

“Come visit us, bring Harry!”

That evening, Emily announced, “Youre bringing Lucy and Harry on Saturday. No arguments.”

Thomas groaned. “Why meddle? Im not marrying her.”

“Im not forcing you. But I like her.”

The visit went welleven Thomas seemed happy.

Then Lucy stopped answering calls.

“Tom, whats wrong? Lucys not picking up.”

“We split. Dont ask.”

“Why? What happened?”

“Harrys ill. Needs expensive treatment. Shell expect help. Easier to walk away.”

Emily stared. “You abandoned her because you wont help her son? Youre despicable.”

“Not my kid, not my problem.”

“Use your car savings! A lifes worth more than metal!”

He left. Heart heavy, Emily withdrew her savingsemergency funds, painstakingly saved.

Lucy finally called.

“Emily, Im sorryits been chaos”

“I know. I want to help Harry.”

“You shouldnt. Were strangers.”

“Not to me. And Im ashamed of Thomas.”

The next day, Emily handed her the money.

Then she turned to Thomas. “Pack your things. Go live in your flat.”

“Over *her*? Choosing a stranger over me?”

“Im ashamed of you. Whatll become of me in old age?”

He slammed the door on his way out.

Harry recovered. Emily visited often, bringing treats.

Then she noticed Lucys loose dresses.

“Lucy are you pregnant?”

“Five months. I hid itthought Thomas would accuse me of trapping him. I couldnt go through with an abortion. Its a girl.”

Emily hugged her. “My dream! A granddaughter! Ill helpthank you!”

The baby, Sophie, was born healthy. Thomas knew nothing.

One day, he spotted Emily with a pram.

“Mum, babysitting now?”

“I manage.”

He peered in. Lucy arrived.

“Hello, Thomas. Everything alright, Emily? Sophie behaving?”

Thomas froze. “Your kid? You remarried?”

“She has a mother. Thats enough.”

“And a grandmother,” Emily said. “Thomas, meet your daughter.”

He stared, then walked off.

Days later, he offered Lucy money. She refused.

Five years on, Emily had a stroke. Lucy and the children moved in to care for her.

Thomas remained a bachelor, visiting occasionally.

Emily signed her flat over to Lucyto pass to Sophie.

“Funny, isnt it? I gained two baggage grandkidsHarry and Sophie. Youre my family now.”

Shed never have guessed this kind woman would become like a daughterwhile her own son grew distant.

Lifes full of surprises.
