Daughter-in-Law with Extra Baggage

“A Daughter-in-Law with ‘Baggage'”

“Emily, has your son gotten married? I saw him with a woman and a little boy. Did he take on someone elses ‘baggage’?” the neighbour asked Emily.

“Not yet, but Id be happy if he did,” Emily replied, surprised.

This was unexpected news. Her son, Daniel, still lived with her and hadnt mentioned any plans to settle down.

“Daniel, I heard youve been seen with a woman and a child. Are you seeing someone?” Emily asked when she got home.

“Oh, those busybodiescant keep anything to themselves. I wasnt going to tell you yet. She has a child, so its not serious. Charlottes a widowher husband died two years ago, and shes raising her son alone. We met through work, and things just happened. Dont worry, I wont bring her home.”

“And here I was, getting excited. So what if she has a child? Theres nothing wrong with that.”

“No, Im not raising someone elses kid. I want my own.”

“She could have yours! Youre 34how much longer will you stay single?”

“Im still young, Mum. Are you wishing bad luck on me?”

“How is starting a family bad luck? Its happiness, Daniel.”

Daniel owned his own flat but preferred living with his mother, renting his place out to save for a new car. His mum cooked, did his laundryit was convenient. Besides, the women he dated, upon learning he lived with his mother, lost interest in marriagejust how he liked it. A bit of fun, then part ways.

He never mentioned his flat, meeting women at their places or booking hotel rooms. This life suited him just fine.

One day, Emily spotted Daniel with that woman on her way home. They strolled leisurely down the pavement. Petite, with long blonde hairquite pretty. Who was she? Emily wished she could meet her.

Soon, the chance came. Emily bumped into her outside a shop.

“Excuse meare you Charlotte? Ive seen you with my son, Daniel. Im Emily.”

“Hello. Yes, Im Charlotte. I know Daniel well. Nice to meet you, Emily.”

“Fancy a coffee? We could chat.”

“Sure, theres a nice café nearbytheir coffees lovely.”

Emily noticed Charlottes nervousness, and she felt awkward herself, as if shed forced the meeting.

Seated at a table, they ordered drinks.

“Daniel mentioned you have a son. How old is he?”

“Hes fiveOliver. My husband died in a car crash two years ago. We live in a one-bed flat now. His parents sold the house we lived in and kicked us outit was in his mothers name. My ex-mother-in-law.”

“Im an orphanraised by my gran. She passed, but left me her old cottage. I sold it, used the money for a mortgage deposit. Now I work as a sales manager. Thats my life in a nutshell.”

Emily listened, liking Charlotte more by the minute. Green eyes framed by thick lashes, a delicate nose. A kind, measured voice.

“Daniel never spoke about you. Id have loved to meet you sooner.”

“Maybe he was afraid youd disapprovea woman with ‘baggage.’ Or perhaps hes not ready for commitment. I dont push. Were happy as we are.”

“Charlotte, pleasebring Daniel and Oliver over. Id love that!”

“If Daniel agrees, wed be delighted. Its been lovely meeting you.”

That evening, Emily announced:

“Daniel, Im expecting you, Charlotte, and Oliver on Saturday. No excuses. I bumped into her todayshes lovely.”

“Mum, why meddle? Inviting them over I dont even know if I want to marry her. Things are fine as they are.”

“Im not forcing youbut Id love to see more of her. Shes sweet.”

Daniel grumbled and stormed offjust like his father.

Emilys husband had left three years ago for a colleague. She hadnt fought ittheir marriage had long been cold. James drank too much, travelled often, and one day, Emily realised they were strangers.

Daniel kept in touch with his father, occasionally updating Emily, though she barely listened.

Charlotte and Oliver arrived with Daniel. Oliver, quiet and well-mannered, shared his mothers fair hair and eyes.

Emily doted on them, offering homemade treats. Even Daniel seemed happier, joking and smiling.

*If only theyd marrygive me a grandchild,* Emily thought.

From then on, Charlotte and Oliver visited often, even without Daniel. Emily adored their chats, their outings. She hoped Daniel would proposeCharlotte was perfect.

Then, Charlotte stopped answering calls.

“Daniel, is Charlottes phone broken? I cant reach her.”

“We split up. Dont ask.”

“What? Why? Everything was fine!”

“Just happened. I dont need complications.”

“What complications?”

“Olivers illneeds expensive treatment. She probably expects help. Well, Im not footing the bill for someone elses kid!”

Emily stared. “Youd abandon her over this? You have savings for a caruse that!”

“Hes not my responsibility. Shell manage.”

“You selfish!”

Daniel left. Emily slumped into a chair, head in hands. How had they raised such a callous man?

She had savingsemergency money. Now was the time. She loved Charlotte and Oliver too much to stand by.

Finally, Charlotte called back.

“Emily, Im sorryIve been swamped.”

“Charlotte, I know. I want to help Oliver. Ill withdraw the money tomorrow.”

“No, pleasewere not family. Ill figure it out.”

“You *are* family. Take it. And Daniels a disgrace. Im sorry for him.”

Charlotte stayed silent. The next day, Emily handed her the money. Grateful, Charlotte promised to repay it.

“Daniel, pack your things. Move into your flatthe tenants are gone. I wont live with you anymore.”

“Wow. Over *her*? You care more for a stranger than your own son?”

“Im ashamed of you. What will become of me in old age?”

Daniel slammed the door on his way out. Emilys heart ached. Her only sonwhat had he become?

A charity stepped in, funding Olivers treatment. Emily visited often, bringing gifts.

She spoke to Daniel, but coldly. Charlotte never mentioned him.

Then Emily noticedCharlotte wore loose dresses.

“Charlotte are you pregnant?”

“You guessed. Five months. I hid it from Danielafraid hed think I trapped him. I couldnt go through with an abortion. Its a girl. Ill manage.”

“Oh, Charlotte! This is my dreama granddaughter! Ill help, I promise!”

The pregnancy was smooth. A healthy girlSophiewas born. Daniel wasnt told.

Emily babysat, bought clothes, doted on her grandchildren. Sophie had Daniels dark hair and sharp nose.

*Such happiness, and hes missing it,* Emily thought.

One day, Daniel spotted Emily pushing a pram.

“Mum, since when do you babysit? Need money?”

“I dont need *your* help.”

He peered into the pramand froze. Then Charlotte arrived.

“Hello, Daniel. Emily, hows Sophie?”

“Perfect! Fed, slept, now were walking.”

Daniel gaped. “Your child? You remarried? Whos the father?”

“She has a mother. Thats enough.”

“And a grandmother,” Emily added. “Daniel, shes *yours*.”

“Mine? And you hid it? Unbelievable.”

He left without another word.

Days later, he turned up at Charlottes, offering money. She refused, still hurt.

Five years passed.

Emily had a stroke. Charlotte and the children moved in to care for her. Oliver read to her; Sophie brought meals. They adored their gran.

Daniel remained single, visiting occasionally. Sophie knew he was her father but shied away.

Emily signed the house over to Charlotte, to pass to Sophie later.

“Charlotte, meeting you was fate. Now I have two wonderful ‘baggages’Oliver and Sophie. Thank you.”

Shed never imagined this gentle woman would become like a daughterwhile her own son grew distant.

Lifes surprises, indeed.
