Emily was over the moon with joy. At last, her beloved William had proposed—simply, sincerely, without any fuss, with that unmistakable warmth in his voice that made her heart skip a beat. Of course, she said yes—and within days, the whirlwind began: guest lists, dress fittings, menu debates. It was like something out of a fairy tale.
“Emmy, love, I think it’s time you met my parents,” William said one evening. “Mum’s invited us for supper this Saturday.”
“About time,” Emily laughed, planting a kiss on his cheek.
When Saturday evening came, they arrived at his parents’ home. Emily pushed open the front door with nervous excitement—only to freeze in shock. There, in the armchair, sat William’s father, a stern-faced man with weary hands. He looked up—and his expression twisted. Emily felt the ground vanish beneath her feet.
This man was the enemy of her family.
When Emily was just eleven, tragedy shattered her childhood. The parents of her best friend, Alexander, had died in a motorbike accident on their way back from the city. It was a dreadful day. Her mother, Margaret, wept on the porch while her father, Edward, clenched his jaw in silence. He’d always disliked Alexander’s father, Thomas—his old rival from school days. Once, they’d both loved the same girl, Charlotte. She’d chosen another, and Edward had never forgiven it.
After the accident, Alexander stayed with them briefly, but Edward refused to let it last. He insisted the boy be sent to an orphanage, coldly telling Margaret, “I won’t have my daughter mixing with that man’s son.”
He even forbade Alexander from calling Emily. A month later, the family moved to another town.
The connection was severed.
Fourteen years passed. Emily finished university and landed a job at a large trading firm. The team was young but icy—some envied her beauty, others doubted she’d last. Her first day felt endless.
On the fourth day, carrying files to the office, she collided with a man in the hallway. Papers scattered; they both bent to gather them—and Emily’s breath caught. Her heart slammed against her ribs.
“Alexander?!” she gasped.
He looked up—and knew her instantly.
“Emily… Bloody hell, is it really you?”
They embraced right there, oblivious to their stunned colleagues.
After work, Alexander waited for her outside. They spent hours in a café, talking. He told her he’d been adopted, that he worked at the same company. Emily invited him home to meet her parents. Her mother was delighted, but her father… Edward didn’t bother hiding his disdain. He snapped, “What do you do, then?”
“Delivery driver,” Alexander answered smoothly—though Emily knew he was being modest.
Soon, they were dating. Blissfully happy. Emily glowed; Alexander doted. They became inseparable. Then one day, he took her hand and said, “Marry me, Emily.”
“Yes, Alexander! Of course!”
She rushed to tell her parents. Her mother wept with joy. Her father only muttered, “Do as you like. But I’ll never approve of him.”
“Why do you hate him so much?!” Emily cried.
“I don’t owe you an explanation. You’re grown. Choose your path.”
Alexander arranged the dinner himself, eager for her to meet his adoptive parents. Emily arrived—and stopped dead in the doorway. His father was none other than Sir Reginald, the firm’s managing director, a man the office treated like royalty. And Alexander wasn’t a driver—he was the deputy director and co-owner.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she whispered.
“You never asked,” he replied with a grin.
Their colleagues had known all along—that’s why they’d looked at her with envy. And her father… Edward sat speechless at the table, realizing his mistake wasn’t just an error. He’d destroyed a childhood bond. He’d nearly kept them apart forever.
The wedding was grand. Alexander’s parents gifted them a lavish flat. Edward remained dazed. Later, he confessed to Emily: he’d gone to the orphanage himself, barred Alexander from calling, orchestrated the move—all to outwit fate.
“Forgive me, love,” he said. “I thought I was doing right.”
“You were avenging a ghost. And we paid the price. But fate found us anyway. Because love beats everything—even your grudge.”
Now, Emily and Alexander thrive, building their future together. The past lingers only as proof—true love always finds a way. Through bans, years, and separation. Nothing can stop it.
