Dreams of a New Life Shattered by Reality

Emma decided to try living together, but reality shattered her dreams.

Emma had always been a woman beloved by everyone around her, but fate led her down a path of solitude. In her youth, she dedicated herself to books and knowledge, which her parents, particularly her mother, cherished like treasure. She grew up in a small town near Cambridge, surrounded by quiet and the pages of old novels, far from the hustle and bustle of worldly passions.

One day, a man breezed into her life—tall, wealthy, and with an enchanting smile. He courted her ardently, and marriage seemed as inevitable as sunrise after nightfall. But fate dealt a cruel blow: the sudden death of her father and her mother’s severe illness shattered all her plans. Emma stayed behind to care for her ailing mother while her fiancé, unable to withstand the trials, drifted out of her life like a phantom, leaving only the bitter taste of betrayal.

Years later, after her mother’s passing, Emma suddenly felt a deep longing for another’s warmth. She watched as her friends found freedom after divorces, spreading their wings, yet her heart yearned for closeness, for someone to share her solitude. Then, fate introduced her to David, a widower. He was a kindred spirit—an aficionado of 19th-century literature, quoting Dickens and Austen, and their fireside chats ignited a romance. Despite her friends’ warnings—”Why do you need this at your age? Live for yourself!” —Emma and David ventured into marriage, believing that love could conquer all.

Reality, however, was unkind and unyielding. Living together turned into a daily challenge rather than an idyll. David, with his habit of leaving things scattered and living in disorder, became Emma’s nightmare. Her world, where everything had its place, where each book stood straight on the shelf, and every cup knew its spot, collapsed under the pressure of his chaos. Every day became a test of patience, an attempt to find even a drop of harmony amidst the disorder.

She tried to communicate with him, opening her heart, begging him to share the responsibility for their home. But her words vanished into the void—David remained deaf to her pleas, to her pain. After another incident, when she found her favorite books carelessly piled in a corner and the kitchen buried in dirty dishes, Emma reached her breaking point. Tears choked her as she said, “I want to leave. I want my peace back.” She longed for that quiet, solitary life where no one intruded on her world, where she was the master of her fate.

Yet David, citing his own matters, asked for time to “sort things out.” He stayed on in her home, exacerbating her suffering. Every step he took, every sound of his presence cut into her heart like a knife. Nine months—that’s how long this agony, this marriage, which became a prison for her, lasted. At last, the divorce was finalized, and Emma broke free.

Returning to her solitude, she felt her lungs fill with air and her soul with forgotten joy. The walls of her small flat once again became her refuge, her fortress. She sat with a cup of tea, gazing out at the autumn rain, and for the first time in a long while, she smiled—genuinely, from the heart. The freedom she regained was more precious than any illusions of happiness with another. Emma realized: her life belonged solely to her, and she would never again allow anyone to disrupt this fragile, yet so precious peace.
