Reunion Evening
Sarah felt herself to be the plainest girl in her class. At least, that’s what she believed. She was petite, slender, and had red hair… Sarah was self-conscious about her appearance, envying her blonde, blue-eyed classmates.
“My dear, you’ll blossom like a rosebud eventually,” her mother reassured, “I didn’t start to look like a young lady until I was sixteen. So don’t rush; you’ll soon captivate the boys’ hearts. And right now, you’re only thirteen.”
“Mum, I’m not in a hurry,” Sarah would say, lowering her lashes, but her green eyes told a different story. She often gazed at her reflection with a hint of melancholy.
She had long fancied a boy from the parallel class – Jack. Athletic, tall, cheerful. His boldness in games and antics bordered on recklessness. Watching the boys play basketball in PE, Sarah’s eyes were always on Jack. His passion and energy fired up the entire team, ensuring their victory.
Even without his good looks, Jack would have appealed to Sarah, but his charm left her feeling she had no chance with such a leader.
Moreover, he was always surrounded by friends – breaking through was impossible. He was never alone, always amidst a crowd. Yet, even those brief encounters in the hallway were a delight for Sarah. But her self-doubt was ever present. As she would pass Jack, she’d barely glance at him before averting her gaze…
Sarah kept her childhood infatuation a secret, though she felt the entire world knew her heart. She blushed at the mere thought of classmates or, heaven forbid, Jack himself laughing at her…
Determined to forget the heartthrob, Sarah resolved not to pay him any mind or think about him at all. Initially, this was a struggle, but with time, her resolve paid off. Sarah calmed down and found inner pride.
“The main thing is to avoid close encounters,” Sarah would whisper to herself. Spotting Jack at school, she’d quickly change direction, hiding behind others.
Two years passed. Sarah excelled in her studies, grew taller, and stopped being so self-conscious, as her mother’s predictions came true: she blossomed into a slender, graceful young woman over a single summer.
After finishing eighth grade, Sarah went on to college. She heard about Jack and other classmates only from her former teacher, Mrs. Thompson, who lived on the same road as Sarah.
Sarah rarely attended school reunions. Her class wasn’t particularly close, and she didn’t have many school friends. Just once, during Mrs. Thompson’s anniversary, Sarah decided to attend to congratulate her favorite teacher.
Thirty years had passed since their class graduated! The reunion was touching as many hadn’t seen each other since those school days. Even classmates from the parallel class attended.
Sarah trembled upon seeing Jack. A tall, distinguished man, with grey streaks and a neat beard. He barely resembled the daredevil boy she remembered, although his eyes remained the same – Jack’s lively, sparkling eyes.
The assembly hall buzzed with chatter. After offering congratulations to Mrs. Thompson, everyone mingled in groups, many embracing one another.
Imagine Sarah’s surprise when Jack approached her with a broad smile, greeting her:
“Oh, my secret school crush… Sarah.”
He gave a slight bow and kissed Sarah’s hand. As if no decades had passed – Sarah blushed.
“C-Crush? Me?” she stammered, “Why am I only finding this out now?”
They both laughed. All of them had long formed families, with children. Jack and Sarah included.
Standing to one side, Jack shared stories of his work, family, and son with Sarah.
“I have a son too,” Sarah said, as she had always dreamed. She sighed and, gazing at Jack, suddenly asked:
“But tell me: why? Why did you like me? I was the quiet, shy one… And not at all pretty…”
“That’s just it. You didn’t want to be with me like everyone else did. You always walked by with your head held high… I couldn’t even muster the courage to approach you. Proud. But you were captivating. Although now it’s just a sweet memory of youth.”
“And I liked you just as much, though I couldn’t possibly tell you everything…” Sarah suddenly blurted, “But I couldn’t break through the crowd of your entourage… And I couldn’t approach first. But indeed, it was merely a childhood crush.”
“Who knows…” Jack said thoughtfully, “Maybe we missed something in our lives.”
“Possibly,” Sarah laughed, “Perhaps we’ll meet again in the next life.”
“I’ll be searching for your green eyes,” Jack whispered with a gentle smile. It was clear he was charmed by Sarah, who truly had blossomed into a beauty. A late bloomer, as her mother had once said.
Suddenly, Sarah heard her name being called.
“Mum! Dad and I came to pick you up, just as you asked…”
A young man was making his way through the crowd to Sarah and Jack.
“Meet my son,” Sarah said with a smile.
“Jack,” Sarah’s son cheerfully extended his hand.
“Jack Jr,” Jack offered his hand back. He looked at Sarah, his eyes filled with surprise, tenderness, and confusion.
Sarah waved to him and headed to the door. By the school’s entrance, Jack caught up with her.
“Listen, Sarah…” he looked at her with moist eyes, “thank you…”
“For what?” Sarah was puzzled.
“For our son. Another Jack is growing up. Thanks for the memory…”
Sarah nodded. She approached the car and took a seat in the back.
Sarah’s husband asked:
“So, how was it?”
“It was nice,” Sarah replied, “Many friends showed up. It was lovely to see everyone. A bit sad, of course. Time changes us… I’m happy for Mrs. Thompson. She’s a heroic teacher. May she have the strength to inspire many more generations…”
