Fate’s Twists: Found My True Love on the Road to the Sea

Fate Takes Unexpected Turns: I Found the Love of My Life on a Seaside Road

If someone had told me in my teenage years that I would one day meet my destiny by the side of the road, I probably would have laughed it off. Now, nearly fifty years later, I share this story with a smile to my grandchildren. Initially, they don’t believe it, then they laugh, and by the end, they ask me to tell it again. Because true love can find us even where we least expect it—like on the road from London to Brighton under the blazing summer sun.

I was seventeen then, fresh out of school and eager for a break before starting university. The idea formed to head to the coast with my friends to that much-dreamed-of Brighton. As usual, money was tight, and someone suggested, “Why don’t we hitchhike?” We split into pairs to make it easier to catch a ride. I ended up with Sarah—a girl I barely knew, who had joined our group last minute.

We reached Crawley easily enough. After that, though, others got rides ahead, leaving us behind in the heat. Finally, when a lorry stopped, there was only room for one. Sarah jumped in, promising to meet me at our friend’s place in Brighton. I was left alone on the hot pavement, sunburnt and choked with emotion, almost giving up and returning to London.

Then an old, rattling Ford pulled up beside me. Behind the wheel was a lad of about twenty, wearing a light shirt, sun-kissed skin, with a shy smile. He said he was heading to see his grandfather near Brighton. I hesitated but got in. And that’s when the story of my life began.

His name was John. He had just finished his service and was planning to study architecture in London. As we drove, he shared funny stories from the army, joked, laughed, and I felt the fear slipping away, giving room to lightness and… affection. We chatted like old friends. He was kind, sincere, unlike any guy I’d known. After reaching Brighton, he offered to drive me all the way to Seaford. I accepted.

When we said goodbye, he blushed and quietly asked if I’d like to meet up in London. Of course, I said yes. And meet we did. Once, then again, and then—love happened. Real, quiet, assured love. We married two years later when he was already studying and I was working. We lived modestly but happily, raising two children who later gave us grandchildren.

Recently, our eldest grandson came home beaming. “Gran, I’m in love!” he announced. It turned out he’d been driving along the highway when he saw a girl struggling with her car. He stopped to help. They ended up sharing coffee afterward. Then a movie. A month later, he introduced us to her. A beauty, smart and bright. Now they’re planning a wedding.

I can’t help but marvel at the turns life takes. The road from London to Brighton has turned out to be quite lengthy. And it’s brought me so much joy. Don’t be afraid to open up to the world—love comes when you least expect it.
