For 8 Years, I Rented My Flat to a Young Couple – He Worked at a Garage, She Was a Retail Assistant

For nearly eight years, I rented out my flat to a coupleboth newcomers to the city. The man worked at a car garage, and the woman was a retail assistant. The rental income covered the utility bills for both my flat and the rented one, with a little left over for petrol. Over the years, we maintained a polite, professional relationship, and I never had any complaints about them.

Then, last year, the womanEmilycalled me in tears. She explained that shed been diagnosed with a tumour in her breast. After struggling to get a doctors appointment and waiting weeks for tests, she learned it was stage three cancer. When her boyfriend, James, found out, he left her. She had friends, but none close enoughor well-off enoughto help. With James gone, she couldnt afford the rent on her own and asked for two weeks to move out. She planned to return to her village, where there was a small hospital. Theyd operate there, and shed continue treatment locally.

But I knew she wouldnt survivenot there. Our city hospital was far better equipped. So I told her she could stay in the flat rent-free while she underwent treatment. If she could cover the utilities, fine; if not, Id manage. She cried with gratitude. Her mum came from the village to care for her after the surgery, which went well. Emily endured chemotherapy and eventually went into remission.

While they lived there, they paid the utilities when they couldnot always the full amount, but something. They insisted they couldnt take it for free. What stung most were the comments from people who knew: colleagues, friends, even my own mother called me a fool for “throwing away money” when I couldve rented to someone else. Had people really become so heartless? James never came backinstead, he spat cruel words, saying shed be “a freak with one breast.” Emily was lovely; hearing that must have shattered her.

Now, shes healthy, under regular check-ups, and doing well. She kept working, continued renting from me, and later met a new mantheyre getting married this summer! Im overjoyed for her. Weve grown close, and Im honoured to attend the wedding. By autumn, they plan to take out a mortgage and move on.

Financially, those months were tight, but I didnt go bankrupt. And in the end, helping someone survive was worth far more than money. Sometimes kindness costs usbut what we gain in return is priceless.
