Future Mother-in-Law Canceled Our Wedding, Blaming My Illness for Infidelity

Until recently, my life felt like something out of a fairy tale. I had a loving partner, was hopeful about becoming a mother soon, and was eagerly preparing for our wedding. However, one hospital visit shattered everything I held dear, leaving me feeling empty and in despair.

My fiancé, Andrew, and I were making plans for our future: we had rented a cozy apartment in London and were dreaming about our wedding. We spent our evenings together, cherishing the peace and warmth we shared. A month before our big day, I began experiencing morning sickness. My heart whispered: this was the miracle I’d been dreaming of. But I chose to keep it a secret from Andrew, planning to surprise him with the joyful news. On that day, I visited my parents to share my excitement with my mum.

While in the taxi, I felt dizzy but brushed it off as fatigue. At home, Mum made me a chamomile tea, which helped, but by nightfall, a fever gripped my body, as if I were burning from the inside out. Despite my protests, Mum called for an ambulance. The doctor, after examining me, turned pale and delivered the blow:

— Emergency surgery is needed. Suspected ectopic pregnancy.

Those words struck like lightning. I had wanted so much to give Andrew a child, but now that dream had crumbled to dust, leaving only fear and pain.

I awoke post-surgery in a hospital room, with a weary doctor looking at me with compassion.

— I’m sorry, my dear. We barely saved you.

It was at discharge that I understood what he was apologizing for. They had saved my life, but my hopes of becoming a mother were taken from me forever. I couldn’t bring myself to tell Andrew the truth—fear that he’d leave upon learning I couldn’t give him children gripped me tightly. He loved kids so much! At home, I lied about a routine check-up. I’m not sure if he believed me, but his mother, Tamara, surely suspected something was amiss.

A week before the wedding, Andrew and I intended to take time off for a break before the celebration. However, work got hectic—I was wrapping up a vital project while Andrew managed things at home. Finally freed earlier than expected, I returned, excited to see him. But as I walked through the door, a conversation snippet froze my blood. Tamara’s voice thundered:

— I told you she’s still running back to that Stan! A week spent in gynecology, and you’re none the wiser!

— Mum, it was just a check-up…— Andrew tried to argue.

— Wake up! She had an abortion! And apparently, not a smooth one. I’m a woman; I know why they admit someone to the hospital. You’re a love-struck fool! The wedding should be called off. It’ll be a disgrace, not a celebration!

The world spun and I fainted. When I came to, I saw Andrew and his mother. Tamara smiled awkwardly:

— Awake, dear? Have some sweet tea. You and Andrew need to talk. I’ll leave you to it.

Paralyzed by fear, Andrew immediately started speaking:

— Lena, how are you feeling? We need to discuss something. We’ll have to postpone the wedding. You’re too weak. Get well first, and then we’ll marry.

— Andrew, are you serious? It’s not my health you’re concerned about…

— What do you mean?

— I heard your conversation! Do you also think I had an abortion because of infidelity?

He looked away, and it spoke volumes.

— I love you, so I’m willing to forgive. Everyone makes mistakes. But I need time.

— Forgive?! I didn’t cheat on you! I had an ectopic pregnancy, nearly died! I kept it to spare you, not hurt you. And now you’re abandoning me because of your mother’s nonsense?!

— I know Stan still loves you. He told me himself. Maybe you gave in to old feelings…

— It didn’t happen!

— Then why hide the diagnosis?

— I was afraid of losing you! Now, I won’t be able to give you children!

— Lena, I’m sorry, but I don’t believe you. I need to think. We’ll postpone the wedding, and I’ll stay with my parents.

He left without looking back at me. My pain, my health—it didn’t matter to him. He was consumed by unfounded suspicions. This is the end. My world collapsed in an instant.

While he’s with his parents, Tamara will completely poison his mind. I am left alone—no fiancé, no child, no hope. How do I move forward when everything I loved has turned to ashes? I don’t know.
