For a family life to be truly comfortable, husband and wife must place their trust in each other. When only coldness and doubt greet ones return home, it is impossible to expect peace and harmony within those walls. Over time, such a life brings forth countless troubles and chips away at the bonds between loved ones.
Many find it difficult to give their trust freely. These difficulties rarely spring up without cause; more often than not, they are born of past hurts and bitter experience. If a woman once suffered betrayal, for example, she may carry her misgivings into every new relationship. The shadows of suspicion fall even darker on a man who has been unfaithful before. Still, such wounds must be healedor at least tended.
One must combat these attitudes, not for others sake, but for ones own. Living in perpetual suspicion can swiftly lay waste to cherished relationships. Such doubts poison daily life and breed needless anxiety. One neednt believe every word thats spoken, but there is much to be said for calm and honest conversation. A life marked by tension and fretfulness can never bring contentment.
I recall a colleague of mine, Thomas Richardson, who once found himself beset by worry. He noticed that his wife, Eliza, had begun leaving the house much more regularly than usual. At first, he thought nothing of it. But when her trips into town became a twice-weekly ritual, concern gnawed at him. Recently, he stumbled upon something rather alarming. Looking for a pair of old shoes in his own cupboard, Tom uncovered an unexpected surprise tucked away inside an elegant ladies shoebox.
There, nestled among bits and bobs, he found a tidy sum in pound notes. Tom was thoroughly bewildered; Eliza had never mentioned setting any money aside. Mere days after his discovery, the money vanished from its hiding place, and Eliza once again hurried out. Unable to bear the uncertainty a moment longer, Tom resolved to follow her.
To his astonishment, Eliza went no further than across the road, to a small terrace house opposite theirs. Tom cautiously trailed her inside. On the staircase, he heard the soft click of a lock coming from the upper floor. He dashed up straight away and knocked anxiously at the door. But it wasnt a dashing stranger who answered, but an elderly lady, stooped and gentle.
As it happened, Eliza had once met the old woman returning from the greengrocer and had kindly offered to carry her bags. Since that day, she regularly helped the woman, who found both shopping and climbing stairs nearly impossible. Twice each week, Eliza would visit her to fetch groceries and bring back whatever was needed to the solitary old soul.
