Married Because of Colin

**A Marriage for Charlies Sake**

Charlies happy childhood ended when he was five. One day, his parents never came to pick him up from nursery. All the other children had gone home, but he sat at a table, drawing pictures of himself, his mum, and his dad. The nursery teacher kept glancing at him, wiping her cheeks now and then. Finally, she scooped him up, hugged him tightly, and said, “No matter what happens, you mustnt be scared, Charlie. You have to be strong now, okay? Promise me?”

“I want my mum,” he whispered.

“Your aunt and uncle will be here soon. Youll go with them, love. Therell be other childrenjust dont cry.” She pressed her damp face against his before leading him outside to a car. When he asked when hed see his mum again, they told her she and his dad were far away and couldnt come for him that day.

Charlie was put in a dormitory with other boys like him. But his parents never camenot the next day, nor the day after. He cried himself sick, feverish with grief. Only the nurse in her white coat spoke to him plainly after he recovered. She said his parents were in heaven now, watching over him, and he must behave so they wouldnt be sad.

But Charlie didnt believe her. He stared at the sky and saw only birds and clouds. He decided hed find them, no matter what.

First, he scoured the orphanage yard during playtime. Behind a bush, he found a gap in the fence where the bars bent. Too small to slip through, he dug beneath them instead, clawing at the loose, sandy soil until he could wriggle free.

Once outside, he ran blindly, desperate to escape the place he hated. But the city was unfamiliar, the houses all looked the same, and soon he was lost. Then he spotted a woman crossing the streether polka-dot dress, her neat blonde bunjust like his mum.

“Mum!” he cried, sprinting after her.

She didnt turn. He caught her sleeve, and when she knelt, he knew it wasnt her.

Emily had fallen in love at twenty, and it was forever. She and Daniel were perfect together, meeting by chance at a summer dance. Hed asked her for a slow song, shy but smiling, and theyd talked all evening. Three months later, they married. But after three years, Emily learned she couldnt have children. Daniel struggled to accept it, and she endured endless treatments. When they finally gave up hope, Daniel suggested adoption.

Emily loved him too much to hold him back. “Divorce me,” she said. “Youre still youngfind someone who can give you what I cant.”

Daniel refused. So she lied. She claimed shed fallen out of love, that there was someone else. He didnt believe heruntil she stayed out all night, reeking of wine and another mans cologne. Heartbroken, he agreed to the divorce.

Two months later, a lost little boy called her “Mum,” and Emilys heart leapt. “Whats wrong, sweetheart? Are you lost?”

“Im looking for my mum and dad. They said theyre in heaven, but I dont believe it,” Charlie sobbed.

She took him home, fed him cake and strong tea while he told her everything. The older boys stole his sweets, called him names, left bruises. Emilys heart ached. “What if I took you home with me? When youre older, youll understand. Youll see your parents againjust not yet.”

Charlie agreed.

She rang the orphanage, returned him, and visited daily. But she couldnt adopt himnot without a husband. For the first time, she regretted the divorce.

Desperate, she asked a colleague, Simon, for a sham marriage. He agreedfor a price. Hed always fancied her, and now she was alone. The idea disgusted her, but shed promised Charlie.

Then she saw his black eyepunishment for “telling tales.” The staff had betrayed her visit, and now hed suffer. That night, she set the table, lit candles, and waited for Simon in a red dress, sick with shame.

The doorbell rang. But it wasnt Simonit was Daniel.

“Ive been watching you,” he said. “Theres no other man, is there?”

The lift dinged. Simon staggered out, flowers and champagne in hand. “Em, darling”

Daniels fists clenched. He left without a word. Emily chased him, screaming explanations, but he vanished onto a bus.

Two years later, Charlie stood proudly in his school uniform, clutching flowers for his teacher. His parentsEmily and Danielwatched with his little sister, Rosie, giggling in Daniels arms. Emily wore the polka-dot dress Charlie loved.

Simon hadnt been a complete villain. Hed told Daniel the truth. The next day, Daniel dragged Emily to the registry office, and they adopted Charlie. Soon after, they took Rosie too.

“Mum, Dad,” Charlie whispered, glancing skyward, “Ill be good at school. Dont be mad Ive got new parents now. I love thembut theyre just till I see you again.”

He knew the truth nowhis parents had died in a car crash. He visited their graves. Sundays, he went to Sunday school, and finally understood heaven.

Emily had refused to listen, tried to fix things her way. But fate stepped in, and she married Daniel twice. In the end, everyone was happy.

Funny, how life works. Sometimes the hardest choices lead us right back where we belong.
