You wont believe what happened at Alexs birthday the other weekend. My ex-husband David showed upyes, showed up uninvitedwith his new wife, Amanda. It was supposed to be a quiet birthday in Brighton, just a few school friends, fairy cakes, a bunch of balloons, and a cheap Bluetooth speaker for some background music. Id planned everything to the last detail: not a hitch in sight.
Suddenly, a black Range Rover pulled up at the kerb and I honestly felt my heart skip a beat. Out stepped Davidimmaculate shirt, expensive watch flashing in the sunlight, and that calm, smug look he always wore when he thought he was winning. Right beside him was Amanda, perfectly done up, not a hair out of place, heels that looked straight out of a magazine, and a smile so forced it nearly cracked her lips. Her whole energy screamed, Hes with me now.
Alexs face lit right up when he spotted his dad and ran to him, beaming from ear to ear. David pulled him into an ostentatious hug and Amanda gave Alex a peck on the cheek. Her perfume was so strong, I swear it wafted clear across the garden.
Then she handed Alex a gift bag, and you should have seen his facepure joy. But, of course, Amanda wasnt finished. From behind her back, she pulled out a broom. Honestly, a broom.
Here you are, sweetheart, Amanda said with this sickly sweet tone, Why dont you help your mum tidy up a bit? Its your responsibility.
Honestly, it felt like a slap. Alex just froze, his cheeks going pink, mortified. Some of the other parents did those awkward, apologetic smiles. David kept quiet, pretending he was examining the fairy cakes. I gripped my plastic cup so tightly the lemonade nearly sloshed out. Every part of me was ready to explode.
But in that moment, Alex caught my eye, searching my face. And I kept it togetherI gave him the warmest smile I could manage.
Alex, I said softly, you can pop that down for now and see what your other presents are. He nodded, doing just that, though carrying the broom like it was a lead weight. Amanda straightened her back, looking very pleased with herself.
The party carried on. Out came LEGO sets, art boxes, and superhero t-shirts. Alex smiled for the crowd, but I could see that what Amanda had said still hung about him, a shadow behind his eyes.
I joined in the games and laughed along. I wanted Alex to feel pure happiness that day. I waited, though. You know, some people thrive on getting a rise out of youa bit of dramatic fireworksand I wasnt going to give her (or David) the satisfaction.
Soon, it was time for the last present. It was just a tiny box, wrapped in gold paper. Alex carefully unwrapped it, and inside was a velvet pouch. He opened it to find a little silver house-shaped keyring and a card. On the card, it read:
For your future, Alex. With all my love, Mum.
You could see itevery guests face softened at once. Amandas smile slipped. Davids jaw twitched. They knew exactly what I was saying.
I knelt beside Alex. This is a really special key, I told him gently. Its a promisea promise I made to you.
Alex blinked up at me, What kind of promise?
That youll always have a home of your own, I answered, locking eyes with both David and Amanda.
Amanda gave this little snort. David piped up, utterly confused, Whats that meant to mean?
It means, I said, keeping my voice even, that I bought a house a few months ago, Alex. With money I earned myselfwhile you laughed at me over that cleaning business you thought was a joke. Amanda looked like shed swallowed a fly, That little cleaning thing? she muttered.
Yes, I said, steady as anything. And now weve got a lovely place in a good neighbourhood, with a garden for you and a room thats yours forever.
David clenched his jaw. Amanda was speechless. I just sat there, calm and collected. Just because youre his dad doesnt mean you get to write our story or rewrite me out of it.
Alex gripped that keyring tightly. He understoodthis was security, something Amanda could never shake.
He looked up, Are we moving out soon, Mum?
Not just yet, I said gently, brushing his hair, but soon. And youll get to paint your new room any colour you like.
Even blue?
Blue especially.
Thenthis is the bit Ill never forgetAlex picked up the broom and walked right over to Amanda. He held it out and said, as polite as you like, I think you should keep this. You brought it.
Amandas fingers actually trembled. David murmured, Alex, thats enough. But Alex stood his ground, chin high. My mum works really hard. She doesnt need help. Shes not weak.
And just like that, the shame that had settled on him melted away; in its place were pride and courage. The adults were stunnedabsolutely stunned. It was Alexs moment.
David tried to mutter, You didnt have to do all this.
I looked at him, I did it for Alex.
When the Range Rover finally drove away, the whole party felt lighter, like a great weight had gone. Alex gave me a huge hug.
Are you embarrassed, Mum?
Not at all. Im proud.
I squeezed him so tightly. That silver key, it wasnt just a homeit was his future. Something nobody could ever take away from him.
