My Wife Takes Care of Everything at Home While I’m Here with You, My Love

Many years ago, in the quiet lanes of Sussex, my husbands betrayal unfolded in a way I could never have imagined. Had I known then what I know now, I might have laughed at the sheer audacity of it all. But in that moment, as the truth struck like cold winter air, all I could do was act.

It began on an ordinary Thursday evening. Edward returned from his office in London with an uncharacteristic spring in his step.

“Brilliant news!” he announced, loosening his tie. “The firms throwing a gathering tomorrowemployees only. Dreadfully dull, really. Just spreadsheets and shop talk. No need for you to trouble yourself.”

I raised an eyebrow. Edward had never been one for parties. His idea of excitement was watching cricket with a pint in hand. Still, I shrugged.

“Fine by me,” I said, already mentally planning the next days chores.

The following morning, he was oddly affectionatetoo affectionate. As I buttered toast at the kitchen counter, he slipped his arms around my waist and murmured, “Youre absolutely wonderful, you know that?”

I laughed. “Whats all this about? Trying to earn brownie points?”

“Perhaps,” he replied, handing me his favourite white shirtthe one with the infuriating loose button. “Would you mind pressing this for me? Oh, and while Im out, how about whipping up that shepherds pie I love? Extra gravy, just how I like it.”

“Anything else, your lordship?” I teased.

“Actuallyyes,” he grinned. “Could you give the loo a proper scrub? You know how I like things spotless. Never know when we might have guests”

I rolled my eyes but chuckled. Edward had his quirks, and though his requests bordered on absurd, I thought little of it. If only Id known.

That day, I threw myself into housework. The Hoover hummed, the washing machine churned, and the scent of baked potatoes filled the air. My cleaning playlist buzzed in the background, and for a moment, life felt ordinary.

Then the phone rang.

An unknown number.

I nearly ignored it, but something nudged me to answer.

“Hello?”

At first, there was only muffled laughter and thumping music. I frowned, assuming a prank.

Then I heard Edwards voice.

“My wife?” he said, laughing. “Oh, shes likely elbow-deep in gravy or scrubbing the loo. Predictable as clockwork. And here I am, with you, my darling.”

A womans laughter tinkled in the background.

My stomach lurched.

I stood frozen, the phone pressed to my ear as my world tilted. The call dropped.

Seconds later, a text arrivedjust an address. No explanation.

I stared at the screen, pulse racing.

Perhaps it was a mistake. A cruel joke. But deep down, I knew better.

I didnt cry. Not yet.

Instead, I grabbed my coat, snatched the keys, and drove straight to the address.

The shepherds pie could wait.

Edward was in for the shock of his life.

The GPS led me to a posh holiday let across towna sprawling house with gleaming windows and manicured hedges. Fancy cars lined the drive. Through the glass doors, I saw well-dressed guests laughing, glasses clinking.

My stomach twisted at the sight of familiar faces.

Who would be more stunnedEdward or me? I was about to find out.

As I approached, a bouncer stepped forward.

“Can I help you, madam?”

I forced a smile. “Just delivering something to my husband.”

His eyes flicked to the cleaning bucket in my handinside, a toilet brush and a bottle of bleach.

“Tall fellow, white shirt,” I said smoothly.

He hesitated but stepped aside.

The moment I entered, every head turned.

And there was Edward.

He stood at the centre of the room, arm slung around a woman in a tight red dress. He looked brighter than he had in years, laughing, sipping champagnecarefree.

My chest tightened.

Every fibre of me wanted to lunge, but a voice whispered, *Be clever. Make it count.*

Edward saw me.

His face drained of colour. He choked on his drink, stumbling back.

“Margaret?” he stammered, disentangling himself. “Whatwhat are you doing here?”

“Hello, darling,” I said loudly. “You forgot something at home.”

He blinked, bewildered.

I lifted the bucket, displaying the toilet brush.

“Since youre so fond of discussing my cleaning skills, I thought you might need these to tidy up the mess youve made of our marriage.”

A gasp rippled through the crowd.

The woman in red inched away.

But I wasnt finished.

“You see,” I announced, “Edward loves playing the devoted husband at home. Yet here he is, playing house with whoever strokes his ego.”

“Margaret, please,” he begged. “Lets talk outside”

“Oh, now you want privacy?” I cut in. “Where was that concern when you were mocking me behind my back?”

I turned to the room.

“Enjoy the party. And rememberonce a cheat, always a cheat.”

With that, I upended the bucket at his feet and strode out, heels clicking on the marble.

In the car, my phone buzzedthe same unknown number.

A text: *You deserved the truth. Im sorry it came to this.*

Hands shaking, I dialled.

A woman answered.

“Hello?”

“Who is this?” I demanded.

“My names Charlotte,” she said after a pause. “I work with Edward.”

“Why did you do this?”

“Because someone had to,” she sighed. “I watched him lie for months. It made me sick. You didnt deserve that.”

I swallowed hard.

“I had a friend call so you could hear for yourself. You needed to know.”

For a second, I closed my eyes.

I didnt feel anger. I felt relief.

The next morning, Edward found his suitcases on the doorstep.

When he tried the key, the locks had been changed.

Where he slept that night, I neither knew nor cared.

The only message I left on his phone:

*Enjoy.*

And for the first time in years, I smiled.

Not from spite.

But because my life, at last, was my own again.
