She arrived at the hospital alone, with no one beside her during the birth—and the moment her baby was born, the doctor took one look at her and saw something that made him weep.

Right, so Poppy Ashworth walked into the hospital on her own — not a single person with her for the birth. And as soon as her baby was born, the doctor, Edward Bennett, took one look and noticed something that had him crying.

Poppy had gone into labour alone because her husband had done a runner a few months earlier, the moment he’d found out she was pregnant.

The labour went on for hours, but eventually the first cries of the newborn rang out through the room. Everything had gone fine, and the baby was perfectly healthy.

The doctor carefully took the little boy in his arms to hand him to Poppy, but then something strange happened.

Before passing the baby over, he stopped. His hands were shaking slightly. He looked at the baby’s face, then at Poppy’s, and his eyes filled with tears.

“Doctor, is everything okay?” Poppy asked, worried.

He nodded, unable to speak for a few seconds. And then, in a cracked voice, he whispered something that left Poppy completely frozen.

What he’d seen was a small birthmark on the baby’s arm. He knew it instantly because it was exactly the same as the one on his own son, Harry — who had disappeared years ago, and with whom he’d lost all contact. His heart clenched.

Poppy followed his gaze, alarmed, and asked what was going on. The doctor took a deep breath, his eyes still wet, and told her the birthmark was identical to his son’s, which meant the baby was his grandson.

Poppy felt the whole world tilt around her. All the pain of being on her own through labour just dissolved, replaced by something huge and overwhelming. She pulled her son tightly against her, while the doctor, completely moved, realised this little baby had just restored a bond he thought was gone forever.
