There Wasn’t Always Food at Home. My Mum Did Her Best, but Sometimes We Couldn’t Even Afford Bread. I Went to School Hungry Most Days with Nothing in My Bag.

Food wasnt always on the table at home. Mum did her best, but sometimes there wasnt even enough for a loaf of bread. Most days, Id go to school with an empty stomach and nothing in my backpack.

At break time, Id pull out my maths book and pretend to study. I acted absorbed, hoping theyd think I was diligentnot starving.

One day, the new teacher approached me. “Why dont you ever eat at break?” he asked.

Nervous, I replied quickly, “I just want to be top of the class, sir. Better use the time wisely.”

He studied me a moment, then nodded. “Right, I see”

He walked away, and I thought hed bought it. So I kept up the act, my stomach growling as I watched my classmates eat.

A while later, he returned with a bag from the canteen. He set it on my desk and said casually, “Overordered. Wont finish it. Help me out?”

Inside was an oat roll, a juice carton, and even a piece of fruita proper lunch.

I nodded silently. The second he turned away, I shut my book and ate desperately, like I hadnt seen food in days.

I never told him. Never admitted that roll was all I ate that day. Never confessed Id lied to save face.

Years later, I still remember that meal. Not for the roll or the juice, but because someone saw my need and never made me feel small. He helped without questions, without exposing me, without wanting credit. He just helpedquietly, kindly.

After that, I saw him differently. Because I learned some people dont need to ask much to do something extraordinary.
