Turning Back Time: A Birthday Story

“You’ve taken us back in time” — a birthday story

Larissa hurriedly laid out the napkins and set the table. Today was her husband Alex’s birthday—not a milestone, but still special. Their daughters and their families had promised to come, and the grandkids had been begging for a *proper* celebration, just like the old days. Larissa’s mind drifted back to the ’90s…

Back then, nothing came easy. Money was tight, groceries were a battle—but she always pushed through, just to keep warmth and joy in their home. Especially before holidays.

That year, it started with a small request from the girls. Tanya and Emily came home from school looking glum. Good grades, but no cheer. Finally, Tanya admitted, *”Mum, everyone in class has angora hats now. Just us in these old beanies. Please can we get some?”*

Larissa gave in. They might not have been well off, but her girls were bright, hardworking, always helpful. She rushed to the market, scraped together her last few quid, and bought them. Their smiles made it worth it—but now there was nothing left for the birthday.

Then luck struck. The next day at the grocer’s, someone shouted, *”Sausages!”* and the crowd surged. Larissa managed to grab two packs of their favourite cooked ones. Then on Saturday, she snagged butter—the shop assistant whispered when they’d *”put some out.”* With ration coupons and the girls helping, she pulled it off.

By Sunday, the table was laid—like something from their best years. A golden roast chicken sat proudly on a bed of rice. Alex’s dad couldn’t get enough of that melt-in-your-mouth cheese and egg salad. The apple crumble turned out perfectly—his mum even asked for the recipe.

And now—here they were. The girls grown, with families of their own. Alex’s parents long gone. But today? Sunday. Birthday again. Alex had taken their spaniel, Chester, for a walk while Larissa set the table. Not takeaway pizza or sushi—proper home-cooked food. Heartwarming, nostalgic.

The guests arrived almost at once. Grandkids tumbled into the hallway, kicking off shoes, while Tanya and Emily hugged their mum. *”Mum, what’s that amazing smell?”* Tanya asked. *”We don’t want pizza!”* the grandkids yelled from the corridor.

Alex came in last, and everyone rushed to greet him. *”Alright then, let’s eat,”* Larissa smiled.

When they stepped into the dining room, everyone went quiet. *”Mum,”* Emily breathed, *”it’s just like when we were kids… The chicken, the salad, the rice…”*

Laughter, toasts, tea with cake. Just like before—only wiser.

After everyone left, Alex pulled Larissa close. *”Thank you, love. You took me right back. We were happy then, weren’t we? Even saving a year for that sofa, putting off fixing the balcony… But we had each other. And we still do. That’s what matters.”*

*”Happy birthday, darling. Here’s to many, many more.”*
