My Son Brought Home His Girlfriend—She Seemed Suspicious A few days ago, my son brought a girlfriend home. She’s a few years younger than me—four or five, I think. My son has fallen for someone my own age and wants to marry her. To my surprise, she also has a young daughter. I welcomed them in. The most important thing is that my son is happy, and so am I, but I needed to talk it over with someone. As soon as they left, I called my close friend, whom I fondly call my “chill pill.” She’s always there for me and gives the best advice, no matter what’s happening. I told her the whole story and asked for help figuring out what to do next. We spoke for a long time, and probably would’ve talked longer if my son hadn’t come home. He wanted to talk. I was afraid another shocking revelation was coming. “Mum, I want her and her daughter to move in with us,” he said. I didn’t know how to respond, so I said, “Yes, let them move in.” He was delighted and went to share the news. But I couldn’t help but wonder: could she really love my son? Maybe she knows we own a big house in the city centre and that our family is quite well-off—is that why she’s holding onto him? That thought followed me into my dreams. In one, my late husband said to me, “It’s alright.” And when I woke up the next morning, I realised my son isn’t naive—he understands the situation, and even if he makes a mistake, he’ll be able to fix it.
