Lonely at 40! I went to the hills and everything changed!
I’m not one to usually complain, but I guess the moment has come where I need to let it out.
I’m forty.
I have it all: a career, a flat, financial stability.
Yet, as I celebrated my birthday in an empty apartment with a glass of wine, I realized I truly had nothing.
No husband.
No children.
Not even a cat to greet me at the door.
A decision that changed it all
That evening, I made a firm decision:
Something had to change.
I took some time off and headed to the countryside to clear my head a bit.
I craved peace, fresh air, and nature.
But upon arrival, I realized… I’d ended up at a retreat meant for couples!
An untimely meeting
All around me were couples.
Lovers holding hands, kissing, laughing.
There I was, sitting alone in a corner of the café, sipping tea, feeling like I didn’t belong.
But I wasn’t the only one alone there.
At the opposite end of the room sat a man who looked just as lost as I felt.
Our eyes met by chance.
And that’s how it all began.
When two lonely souls meet
His name was Andrew.
He was 42.
Like me, he’d dedicated his life to work and then realized he’d missed what truly mattered.
We talked for hours that evening.
About work.
About life.
About loss.
About the fear of watching time fly by and ending up with nothing.
The next day, we set off on a hike together.
It felt as if I’d known him my entire life.
We laughed like kids, tossed snow at each other, joked as if we were 20 again.
A love that came late
Those days in the hills were some of the happiest of my life.
We took walks, talked about everything, fell asleep holding each other, and watched the sunrise.
For the first time, I felt what it was like not just to be strong, but to be wanted.
I fell in love.
For the first time in many years.
And so did he.
But as the holiday drew to a close, I realized it was just an illusion.
A bitter truth
Before leaving, Andrew was silent for a long time.
Then he said:
– I can’t. I have a wife.
My breath caught.
I froze.
I thought I was about to wake up from this nightmare.
– You… didn’t mention… – my voice shook with betrayal.
He turned away.
– I didn’t want to. I never planned… But you changed me. I haven’t felt this alive for years.
A separation that broke me
He promised me nothing.
He didn’t talk about leaving his marriage.
He just stood there, silently watching me go.
I left first.
Crying harder than I ever had before.
I had lived this dream.
And now it was over.
His final call
A year passed.
I tried to forget.
I even started seeing another man.
But one day, a call from an unknown number turned my world upside down again.
It was his daughter.
– My father… He… He really loved you. He couldn’t live without you.
My heart stopped.
– What?..
– He fell ill. Lost his will to live… Before he passed, he asked me to tell you… he regretted nothing.
I dropped the phone.
The world spun around me.
He was gone.
And I wanted to scream.
What remained after him
I went back to those same hills.
Just to walk those paths once more.
To remember his smile once more.
To feel his presence once again.
He left me memories.
He left me with the feeling that I was truly loved.
Even if that love came late – it was real.
And I will never forget it.
