Left the Entire Family for a Young Lover

My name is Natalie Owen, and I live in Kingston, where the picturesque landscapes of Surrey meet the flowing Thames. I often hear men accusing women like us, claiming we’ve used them, cheated, and been all sorts of things. But why don’t they take a look in the mirror at themselves? Aren’t they sometimes the pitiful, useless creatures they accuse us of being? That’s why I’m sharing my story, to pour out this pain that burns within me like smoldering coal.

I spent a fulfilling 27 years with my husband Andrew. We built a home together, raised two sons, and now have grandchildren. We always understood each other, shared joys and sorrows. However, when he hit 53, something changed. He started staying out late after work, spent hours in front of the mirror, and disappeared over the weekends. Soon, it all came to light: he had lost his head over a young mistress. I would have forgiven him if he had come back and repented. But he threw it in my face that I had aged while he hadn’t, and that I didn’t understand him anymore. He claimed to love her, craved her youth and passion. And her? She couldn’t care less about him—his money was the real allure. As soon as it runs out, she’ll cast him aside like rubbish.

Our sons, Alex and David, tried to talk some sense into him. They told him straight that he was shaming them and how embarrassed they were. But he looked at them like strangers, with empty eyes. I hit my limit and threatened divorce, hoping it would wake him up. Yet, he agreed, almost like he’d been waiting for it. In our twilight years, we parted ways. He now lives with that girl, looking after her child, instead of cherishing our grandchildren and delighting in their laughter. I’m left alone in the house, every corner filled with memories of the past, while he chases the illusion of a new life.

I don’t blame that young woman. She’s played her cards cleverly to survive and take what she can. My ex-husband is just a fool, blind to his midlife crisis. Does he really believe he can rebuild a family at his age? That this young woman will bear his children, care for him? Let him dream! I’m not searching for another man—I’ve had enough of their deceit and betrayal. I don’t need your sympathy, nor tears from strangers. And don’t send me advice or scorn—I won’t read it. Yes, I passed through hell: despair burned me and anger strangled like a noose. He shattered my life just when I least expected it. But I survived, stood firm, and let go of the pain.

Now, I have my children and grandchildren—they are my light and my strength. And what does he have? Soon, he’ll realize his grave mistake. That girl won’t check if he’s taken his blood pressure pills, won’t wash his socks, or have hot soup ready when he comes home. She’s living for herself, and for her, he’s just a walking wallet. When he knocks on my door again—and I know that day will come—he’ll be met with a cold welcome. Neither I nor my sons will forgive this betrayal. He abandoned us for a fleeting thrill, cheap passion, while we remained a family—without him. Let him go to hell with his lover!

I see him in my dreams—as he used to be, young, with a smile that warmed my heart. Then I wake up and remember who he has become: a selfish man who traded his family for an illusion. It’s painful, but I am not broken. Every day I look at my grandchildren and think: life is worth living for them. And him? He will reap what he sowed—loneliness, emptiness, the disdain of those who once loved him. He thought youth could be bought, but love isn’t for sale. When she’s drained his last penny, he’ll be left with nothing—a pitiful, abandoned old man with nobody waiting for him. We, on the other hand, will move forward together, without him. And that’s my revenge—not bitterness, but a strength he couldn’t take away from me.
