Destiny’s Twists: How I Found True Love on the Road to the Sea

Fate has a funny way of turning: I found my true love on the road to the coast

If someone had told me in my youth that I would one day meet my destiny right by the side of the road, I probably would have laughed. Now, almost fifty years later, I smile as I tell this story to my grandchildren—they don’t believe it at first, then they laugh, and by the end, they ask me to tell it again. Because true love can find us even when we’re not looking for it, like on the A303 under the blazing summer sun.

I was seventeen then, fresh out of school, and decided I needed a break before going to university. The idea was to head to the seaside with friends, to that famous Cornwall everyone dreamt of visiting. Money was tight, as usual, and someone suggested, “Why not hitchhike?” So, we paired up to make it easier to catch a lift. I was teamed up with Emily—a girl I barely knew who had joined us at the last minute.

We got to Exeter easily. After that, the others managed to get rides ahead of us, leaving us in the heat. When a truck finally stopped, there was only one space. Emily jumped in, promising to meet me at her grandmother’s in Cornwall. Alone on that scorching road, I felt burnt and had a lump in my throat, contemplating returning to London, feeling like all was lost.

Just then, an old rattling Ford pulled up beside me. At the wheel was a young man, around twenty, in a light shirt, suntanned, with a slightly shy smile. He said he was heading to his grandfather’s near Newquay. I hesitated but got in. And that was when the story of my life began.

His name was Charlie. He’d just returned from the military and was planning to attend an architecture course in London. As we drove, he shared funny stories from his time in the service, laughed, and cracked jokes, and I felt myself relax, my fear replaced by ease and… admiration. We chatted as if we’d known each other forever. He was kind, genuine, and unlike any guy I’d ever met. We reached Newquay, and he offered to take me all the way to Cornwall. I agreed.

When we said goodbye, he blushed and quietly asked if I wanted to meet up in London. Of course, I said yes. And that meeting did happen. Then another. And then came love. Real, calm, confident love. We got married two years later when he was in university, and I was working. We lived modestly but were happy. We raised two children, and then came the grandchildren…

Just recently, our eldest grandson came home beaming. “Gran, I’ve fallen in love!” he announced. It turned out he was driving along the road when he saw a girl struggling to start her car. He stopped to help. Then they had coffee. Then a movie. And within a month, he introduced her to us. Beautiful, smart, a delightful girl. Now they’re planning their wedding.

And I think—how remarkably life unfolds. What a long journey the A303 has been. And how much happiness it has brought me. Don’t be afraid to open yourself to the world—love often arrives when you least expect it.
