After nineteen years of marriage and raising two children, my husband left me for a younger co-worker.
I’m 42, and two weeks ago, my world crumbled: my husband, with whom I’d spent 19 years raising our two children, announced he wanted a divorce. He candidly admitted that he had been in a relationship for two years with a 28-year-old colleague who is now expecting his child.
Since then, I haven’t stopped crying, tormented by the question: how could I have been so blind to not notice his infidelity? I trusted John when he said he was working late due to new projects and frequent business trips around the country. I waited for him, keeping our house in order, cooking his favorite meals, ironing shirts for the week ahead. I never suspected that all this care wasn’t just meant for me and the kids.
I was worried that John was spending less time with the children, drifting away from family traditions. His financial contribution to the household budget had decreased, and domestic issues were left unattended by him. I justified it with his busyness and fatigue. When he told me he wouldn’t be able to join us on holiday that year, I accepted it and took the kids to my parents’ cottage instead. Upon returning home, I noticed a change in John: he became withdrawn, avoided intimacy, and one day I smelled someone else’s perfume on his clothes and saw lipstick marks on his shirt collar.
When I demanded an explanation, he confessed to the affair and announced his intention to leave. My efforts to remind him about the children and the years we’d spent together didn’t change his decision. We sought a solicitor to start the divorce process. I didn’t want to let him go, couldn’t imagine life without him, but knew there was no point in trying to hold on.
Now I’m alone, with a broken heart and afraid of what the future holds. I realize there’s a long road to healing ahead, but I hope I’ll find the strength to carry on for myself and our children.
