Future In-Law Cancels Wedding, Blames My Illness for Infidelity

My future mother-in-law canceled our wedding, blaming my illness on infidelity.

Not long ago, my life felt like a fairy tale. I had a loving man, was hopeful about becoming a mother, and was excitedly preparing for a wedding. But a single visit to the hospital shattered everything I held dear, leaving me in emptiness and despair.

My fiancé, Andrew, and I were planning our future: we rented a cozy flat in York and dreamed about the wedding. Our evenings were spent together, enjoying each other’s warmth and the quietude. A month before the ceremony, I started feeling unwell in the mornings. My heart whispered it was the miracle I had dreamed of. I wanted to surprise Andrew, to gift him a moment of happiness. That day, I went to visit my parents to share the news with my mom.

On the cab ride, I felt dizzy but brushed it off as nothing more than fatigue. At home, my mom brewed some chamomile tea, which made me feel better, but at night, a fever consumed me as if fire was burning me from the inside. I resisted, but Mom, ignoring my protests, called an ambulance. The doctor examined me, turned pale, and declared:

— Urgent care needed. Suspected ectopic pregnancy.

The words struck like lightning. I so desperately wanted to give Andrew a child, but now that dream was reduced to dust, leaving only fear and pain.

I came to in the hospital after surgery, where an exhausted doctor looked at me sympathetically.

— I’m sorry, dear. We barely managed to save you.

Only upon discharge did I understand the reason for his apology. While my life was saved, the chance to be a mother was taken from me forever. I couldn’t tell Andrew the truth — the fear of him turning away, upon learning I couldn’t give him children, choked me. He loves kids so much! At home, I lied, saying it was a routine check-up. I couldn’t tell if he believed me, but his mother, Margaret, definitely suspected something.

A week before the wedding, Andrew and I planned to take a break to rest before the celebration. But work dragged us in — I was finishing an important project while Andrew managed things at home. Freeing up earlier than expected, I returned, looking forward to his smile. However, as soon as I crossed the threshold, I overheard a conversation that froze my blood. Margaret’s voice echoed:

— I told you she’s still seeing that Steven! Spent a week in gynecology and you’re completely oblivious!

— Mom, it’s just an examination… — Andrew tried to argue.

— Oh, wake up! She had an abortion! And clearly, a botched one. I’m a woman, I know why someone’s hospitalized. This wedding must be canceled. It won’t be a celebration, it’ll be a disgrace!

The world blurred, and I collapsed. When I came to, Andrew and his mother were there. Margaret forced a stiff smile:

— Awake, dear? Have some sweet tea. You and Andrew have a chat. I’ll leave you to it.

I was struck with terror, and Andrew immediately began:

— Lisa, how are you? We need to talk. We’ll have to postpone the wedding. You’re too weak. Get well, then we’ll marry.

— Andrew, are you serious? You’re not concerned about my health…

— What do you mean?

— I heard your conversation! You think I aborted our baby because I cheated?

He looked away, which spoke louder than any words.

— I love you, which is why I’m willing to forgive. We all make mistakes. But I need time.

— Forgive?! I never cheated on you! I had an ectopic pregnancy; I nearly died! I hid it to protect you from being hurt. And now you’re leaving me because of your mother’s gossip?!

— I know Steven still loves you. He told me himself. Maybe you gave in to old feelings…

— That never happened!

— Then why didn’t you tell me about your diagnosis?

— I was scared of losing you! Now I can’t give you a child!

— Lisa, I’m sorry, but I don’t believe you. I need time to think. We’ll postpone the wedding, and I’ll stay with my parents.

He packed his bags and left, never once looking back. My pain, my health — it didn’t matter to him. He was consumed by false suspicions. It was over. My world crumbled in an instant.

While he’s with his parents, Margaret will surely poison his mind further. I’m left alone — without a fiancé, without a child, without hope. How do I go on when everything I loved has turned to ashes? I don’t know.
