Is It Normal for My 60-Year-Old Husband to Have a Double Life?

Is it normal for my 60-year-old husband to lead a double life?

I never imagined my marriage would turn into such a nightmare. Fifteen years of my husband’s betrayal unravelled before me—he wasn’t just having an affair; he had another family, including a child, with someone else. The shocking truth hit me like a freezing storm, leaving me numb and lost. I didn’t know where to turn or what to do. I kicked him out, and now he’s begging on his knees for forgiveness. My thoughts are in chaos, my heart is aching, and I can’t find any peace. I was 28 when I married him in our small town near York.

He is older than me by two years. Our love had faced both heaven and hell—we survived poverty, fights, and hardships. Through every storm, we clung to each other for support. Times were tough, sometimes lacking food, but we pulled through. We had children, and life seemed to brighten, like sunshine breaking through clouds. In the early 2000s, things improved. My husband started his own business—a small chain of shops that provided a steady income. He managed everything himself, trusting no one with the operations to avoid mistakes. I stayed out of his work affairs, not even knowing the names of the sales assistants. Little did I know, among them, he found his other life.

One of those saleswomen, young and spirited, worked for him for years before going on maternity leave. Yes, she bore him a son—15 years ago. All those years, I lived in blissful ignorance while he split his time between me and the other woman. He was 46 when he became a father again, and she was just 33. That’s when his “night fishing trips,” “business trips,” and other tales began. He even brought home fish to keep up the charade. While supposedly travelling for business overseas, he was with her and their son. How could I have been so blind, so unaware of his deceit?

I never had any doubts. Over the years, he never gave me a reason to question his fidelity. He seemed caring and attentive, always by my side—or so I thought. The worst part was some of our friends knew from the start. They stayed silent, fearing to open my eyes, hoping he’d come to his senses, leave her, and return to me fully. How wrong they were.

After New Year’s, I left my job. Why work when his company comfortably supported us? But soon, the shops began closing—some issues with paperwork. He withdrew, staying home for days, nervous like a caged animal. I didn’t understand; with our savings, we could have lived worry-free for years! Then, he went away “on business” and forgot his phone. It kept ringing incessantly, so I answered a call from a male name to say he’d call back. But a woman’s voice replied:

“Darling, when are you coming back? We’ve been waiting.”

My world collapsed. I shook as I asked, “Who are you? What is your connection with my husband?” She calmly replied:

“Let Mark explain everything. He’s been meaning to.”

When he returned, drunk beyond reason, I already knew what I would hear. He confessed everything: for 15 years, he had lived a double life. He blamed me, saying I became more focused on my health and less on him. Seeking “fun” with that saleswoman resulted in her pregnancy. After their son was born, he got tangled, unable to choose between us, opting instead for a dual life. He secretly opened another shop, funneling all profits to that family. He couldn’t care less about my pain.

Now he kneels before me, professing his love, promising to break it off with her. But he refuses to abandon his son, claiming he can’t forsake the child. I can’t live like this. Every glance, every word from him now poisons me. I would suspect his every move, every breath. The wound is too deep to heal. Divorce seems the only solution. He shattered everything we built, and I don’t believe it can be repaired.

Mark pleads for another chance, but how can I? How do I live with someone who deceived me for 15 years? I look at him and see a stranger. What do you think? Is there any glimmer of hope to save our marriage, or am I right in seeking an escape from this agony before it drags me down? I stand at a crossroads, and it’s terrifying. Please, share your advice.
