I Couldn’t Resist… I Betrayed My Partner

I lost control… I betrayed my wife.

It happened during the toughest phase of our relationship. By then, we hardly spoke from the heart, and home had become more like a hotel where we simply passed each other by. She spent her days at home with the kids, cooking meals, washing, ironing, and putting them to bed, while I came home tired and irritable. It was as if an invisible wall of routine, silence, and resentment had grown between us. I began staying late at work more often, and then one day, a new colleague joined our team—a beautiful, lively, carefree woman with no kids, no troubles.

I felt like I was transported back to those early days when everything was just beginning. She was cheerful, open, and free from the burdens I felt at home. I started pursuing her—flowers, lunches, cafés, evening walks. I lied to my wife: a colleague’s computer broke down, a meeting ran late, a friend needed a visit. I didn’t even realize how far it had gone. A month later, she invited me over. We spent a night full of passion and tenderness, and at some point, I thought that this was the real thing. Something I had long been missing.

When I returned home, I must have been wearing it all on my face. The flat was quiet—the kids were asleep. My wife met me at the door, exhausted, with a weary look. She didn’t say anything, just gave me a certain look—as if she understood. Then she went to the kitchen. I took a shower, feeling the weight of guilt settle on my shoulders, and followed her. She stood by the stove, her back to me. When I suggested we have dinner together, she simply said, “I’m very tired… I’ll go to sleep.”

Later, when I entered the bedroom, she was already asleep in her clothes, huddled against the pillow like a child. Our family album lay on the ottoman next to her. I picked it up, not even sure why. I opened the first page and felt like I was falling into the past. There she was in the photos—the girl I had once fallen in love with. Young, stylish, smiling, confident. And there I was beside her, with eyes full of life. I remembered how I pursued her, how I dreamed she would be mine, and how, once upon a time, she chose me.

I couldn’t sleep until morning. Faces spun in my mind—my wife’s, my lover’s, the children’s laughter. And then it hit me. I had betrayed not just my wife. I had betrayed myself—the person I used to be. I lost the one who stood beside me in sorrow and joy for a fleeting mirage. And I realized—I could still make it right. I just needed to want it enough.

Early in the morning, while my wife still slept, I called my mum and asked her to take the kids for the weekend. She was surprised but agreed. Then I made breakfast and brought it to my wife in bed. She opened her eyes, looked at me with surprise, and then with a slight smile. And I realized: there was still a chance. I hadn’t lost everything.

I stopped talking to that woman. I didn’t answer her calls, didn’t write back. Yes, I had acted badly. But I don’t want to live a lie. I don’t want to hide, make excuses, or hide my phone anymore. My time is now for my family alone.

That day, I sent my wife to the beauty salon, and in the evening, we went to dine at our favorite restaurant, where we’d once celebrated our first anniversary. The next day, we went to the theatre. Sitting beside her, holding her hand, I realized I had found my way home. A true home isn’t walls. It’s the person beside you. The one you once chose, and who still chooses you, no matter what.
